NEWS FROM CANADA

The federal government announced their budget. It raises the inclusion rate on capital gains above a gain of 250K$, on businesses and trusts. (Ooh, multiple qualifiers there...) From 50% to 67%.

Cue the "brain drain" Cassandra's, just like the 1990s.

Welp, the court says that Trudeau misused the Emergencies Act. Which doesn't surprise me.

"The police have decided that they don't want to work anymore" isn't a scope that was considered in the Act.

Aside: I notice we use both and here in Canada. I will never forgive the internet standards people for going with the 2-letter iso names instead of the 3-letter ones for country-TLDs and language-codes.

3-letter codes would prevent the "is CA Canada or California".

The biggest countries use 2-letter state/prov codes, so 3-letter countries would prevent ambiguity.

My site should be Pxtl.can, written in en-can not Pxtl.ca written in en-ca.

Very disappointed to see the federal backing the climate-denying in attacking the carbon tax on natural gas heating.

's is revenue neutral - if you've average heating needs, you break even. So cutting it on heating is a de-facto subsidy on large, inefficient homes.

Revenue neutral carbon taxes won a Nobel prize. Anybody with alternate ideas on fighting climate change: show me your Nobel prize.

Canadian Senator Paula Simons addresses the senate chamber on the wave of trans-hate sweeping through some provinces & school boards, here in Canada 😢

She shared good facts & challenged the senate to convene its anti-hate action plan, as outlined in the 2023 budget.

Thank goodness, amidst all the misinformation & bluster, rhetoric is still being put to good use in parliament to call out hate & protect all our people.

Trying to follow this story about Canada's Trudeau accusing the Indian government of assassinating a Sikh leader on its soil, and I'm really feeling the demise of old Twitter. Over on "X" half of the quote-tweets are mysteriously unavailable, it really looks like Musk is helping or allowing the government to suppress discussion. On Bluesky I can only find white people talking about it--the Indian voices are super few and far between. And here on Mastodon, search turns up nothing?
