@arstechnica As long as those computers continue to interact with me via switches, knobs and buttons, that's OK. What's not OK is swapping in a giant touch screen to replace all those controls for which we develop muscle memory and can soon use without distraction from, erm, driving.
During the pandemic, #distracteddriving increased and remains high. The government estimates that 3,522 people died because of it in 2021, but experts say the official number probably undercounts the number of deaths, in part because police are rarely able to prove that a driver was distracted before a crash.
Our car was serviced recently . We had a loaner while ours was in the shop. While driving the navigation screen flashed a message saying Software Update Available with buttons for yes / later.
I was a passenger so I pressed "not now" (or whatever the button said). I wish I'd thought to take a photo.
Why ask for software update while driving? Why not wait until parked? Seems like a terrible distraction
Earlier this week I noticed a man filming me with his cellphone while he drove down Raleigh Rd in #ChapelHillNC. Finally got the chance to pull my bike-cam footage and get some screenshots of his vehicle. It's the gray Ford Explorer with the wakeradiology.com branding.
If you see his video of me (white woman, yellow helmet, black mid-tail cargo bike) posted anywhere on the internet, please report it. What he did was illegal & creepy AF.
