Updating images being used by several of my #DockerSwarm stacks. Then attempting to re-watch the 2nd episode of the #BattlestarGalactica miniseries since I wasn't paying attention to it at all the other night 😅
I have a #devops (or what we used to call #sysadmin) question...
I like Docker Swarm for its simplicity and apparent "lightweight" nature. From a user standpoint, you can simply define a set of services and it's not that much of a leap to go from a docker-compose file to a full blown distributed system for a small number f nodes.
The problems are that Docker Swarm only appears to be offered by Docker (tm) and requires the real Docker (tm) stack, as opposed to the solution most distros use today, which is to use podman as a Docker replacement (for many good reasons).
And the fact that Docker is owned by Mirantis, Mirantis's future seems uncertain is good reason not to stay.
Is anyone still using Docker Swarm? If not, do you have a lightweight alternative (not Kubernetes)? I've heard not-great things about Nomad.
I feel like this is a huge missing area in the orchestration landscape.
I setup a #Firefish instance (https://firefish.boo) instance and I must say I really like it. It was very easy to get going and it looks great. There's so many options and settings to play with! 🤓
I don't know why it took me so long to realize I didn't really need to do anything special to update my #SonarQube instance. Before I was creating a new container for the upgrade process when I could have been doing it from the “main" container itself 🤦🏼♂️😅
I've done my #Sunday#server updates. I'm still fiddling around with #DockerSwarm some, but most everything is back to how it was before moving over to that.
I’ve also been working on deploying a #Lemmy instance. Just waiting for my Docker Hub 🐳 pull limit to reset…😒
I love the fact that the CEO of #Portainer jumped into my thread on #Slack to give me a hand on getting it up and running properly the other day on #DockerSwarm. 🙌🏼💛
Also of note I think I've gotten most of my ~110 #Docker containers back online in Swarm. I think I'll probably need to run some of them outside of Swarm since it doesn't seem to support some things like Devices. Excited though, I learned a bunch!
This is going to be a bit more involved then I has anticipated. I'm going to likely have to move at least #Traefik over to this #DockerSwarm manager box and maybe #Portainer. 😫🤓
Apparently one cannot connect to multiple #Docker instances in #Traefik without using #DockerSwarm 😕 I'd like to avoid that so I need to break out my big brain...
