Hey @Unixbigot !
I wondered what that multi-microphone home assistant module was as per #EverythingOpen presentation? Went and installed #HomeAssistant didn't I? Can give it up any time I like...
Our team is going through the #EverythingOpen#survey feedback as part of our debrief process tonight, and we wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who responded.
Your frank, open comments, and warm messages of thanks to our team and volunteers are very much appreciated - and will help with planning for Everything Open 2025.
I was given an Athom WiFi-connected plug at #EverythingOpen which connects to the Open Source Home Assistant. This has necessitated buying a Raspberry Pi 5 to run HA on which in turn led to the discovery of a) it has an API to our solar inverter system, and b) what the engineer's ID and password is. I'm in...
Nearly every company I’ve come in contact with has asked me to:
A. Install their App
B. Give Feedback
First, why do I need the app? Very few had an actual good reason beyond what you’d expect from an email or Wallet ticket. One provided some minigames and additional context, which was very neat. Another added some animated tingles to the ticket to make it harder to copy, but nobody ever checked and it could be exported to an Apple Wallet anyway.
@futuresprog Big talk on #EverythingOpen about apps and https being largely about big players ring-fencing their data, preventing adblockers, and shifting functionality of the web onto their own regional servers for distribution while cutting data transfer costs.
Totally hooked on Professor @aquigley#keynote at #EverythingOpen today - it's all about #interfaces and #HCI - and about #sensors - and how they can be used for secondary purposes to those originally designed - and at the end of the day we are all #human - and this limits the attention we have for input.
Super interesting!
Paper references are on Prof Quigley's Google Scholar:
It’s a pity that the practicalities of solar panels and electric cars meant that—outside of those wacky ultralight ultrawide desert racing contraptions—solar powered cars can’t exist. Until we found out what Starlink is REALLY for. Deposit coin, and as many satellites as you can afford will deploy their little parasols and concentrate sunlight on your Tesolar SUV’s panel.
At #EverythingOpen I'm hearing about RR, (rr-project.org) a record-and-replay debugger for C and C++. Rather than trying to catch a bug as it happens, record everything the program does and then explore its behaviour retrospectively.
You arrive at #everythingopen with your ODP presentation on a borrowed laptop. It runs Windows. You open your presentation and all the images are bent out of shape! Go Windows Settings/System/Display/Scale/100% - oh my, but it works.
As people start (or continue) their journeys to #Gladstone for #EverythingOpen, we'd like to wish you all very safe travels - and we're super excited to welcome you to Central Queensland, and to our home town.
We'd love to hear about your travel journeys - the highs and lows - and we can't wait to see so many of you in person again.
Thank you for making long journeys, and we will do our very best to make it worth your while.
My looong journey to @everythingopen started this afternoon. I'm really excited about this trip (my first time visiting Australia). 🙏🏽 I cannot wait to meet/make new friends on the other side of the world. 🌏
Packed & ready for #everythingopen . Wee bit of house tidying to do before the house-sitter turns up. New strategy for travel: Carry-on is now a tiny 3.5kg shoulder bag (LCA Sydney 2007 swag, holding the decade-old #linux laptop). It's about the size/mass of my Essential Medical Equipment bag, if you include associated sheaf of CAA and FCC documentation.
