@william Congrats! You just earned a complete domain suspension for genderheretics.xyz from mstdn.ca. 🏅🖕
A friend of mine just learned his transgender nephew committed suicide this weekend with a direct correlation to our province's government's decision to restrict the rights to healthcare of transgender youth and their parents.
All three servers have been used for pushing spam across the Feddiverse. In all cases, I’ve given admins time to moderate and remove spam from their servers, and none of them have taken action. Spam continues to be hosted on those servers, and will likely be used for more spam.
Additionally, admins allow open registrations on their servers. They demonstrate a complete disregard for moderation. I suspect that these are abandoned servers.
The following instances that were previously spamming have upgraded to Mastodon 4.2.8 (which stops open sign ups when the instance is not maintained). They are probably safe to unblock if you have them blocked
In both cases, these servers continue to be used for an ongoing spam attack. I’ve given admins of both servers ample time to respond to reports, and they’ve taken no action. Spam continues to exist on their server, and continues to be sent.
Admins continue to allow open registrations on their site. With complete lack of moderation, spammers will continue to register.
Interesting, I'm going through all the instances we limited federation with because of the spam wave. The majority has closed their registrations and dealt with the spam.
But I also found two servers that updated to 4.2.8 but still have open registrations and haven't deleted the old spam.
How do you show the rest of the fediverse that you just don't care one bit? At least we know to stay away from them now.
These servers have been silenced as they are still sending spam despite there being a new version to at least allow some protections against this and moderators should have cleaned servers by now.
I will revisit all my silenced servers including below end of the month. Any servers still sending spam will be considered unmoderated/unmaintained and will be permanently blocked. Any new servers spamming March 1st and beyond will suffer the same fate.
Hey fellow mods: Just got a report for mention spam from a random-letters account on bigballchunkyverse.online, so we may not be out of the woods yet. #fediblock#MastoAdmin
phpc.social has re-federated with america.social, molaguay.xyz, and social.mastodon.my as those servers have cleaned up their spam issues. Thanks to @Seirdy for compiling a list of instances that have cleaned things up.
phpc.social has defederated 9kb.me due to continued spam coming from that instance. We've emailed the admin to apprise them of this, and will re-federate once their spam problem is resolved.
It looks like shit sandwich migrated some of his accounts. Update your blocks folks. @truthsandwich @TruthSandwich
Apparently he thinks his particular brand of trolling will be more welcome on those servers.
@serge and @wild1145
You may want to take a close look at one of your newer members. He's a malignant troll who constantly switches accounts to avoid blocks and spouts hateful rhetoric as pictured in previous posts. #fediblock
All three servers have been thoroughly investigated. In all three cases, they continue to be vectors for spam attacks. No action on spam reports has been taken by moderators, admins have proven to be absentee, and registrations continue to be open.
FYI: On the onging #spam#discord issues...
I had started out by just suspending every domain from which the spam was emanating. Then I tried only Limiting a few of them.
Every domain I Limited has returned with more spam. So I am back to suspending all of them. At this point, if the compromised domains aren't aware of the problem then they're probably not going to wake up anytime soon, if ever.
Also, why can I not “select all” from the report menu so that I can limit/suspend a large number at a time for exactly this kind of situation? This seems like basic functionality.
Rather than:
Individually clicking each report—>
New Domain Block—>
Limit/Suspend—>
Confirm.
Repeat x number of times.
It should be:
Select All (up to 20, 50, 100)
Choose Action (Domain Block)
Confirm
List of Domains to Limit/Suspend
Choose Action (Suspend)
Confirm
Back to Reports
Select All
Choose Action (Assign to Mod)
Confirm
Select All
Choose Action (Mark as Resolved)
Confirm
Done.
This is because:
☠️ It was a source of Spam
☠️ It was running an insecure and outdated version of Mastodon
☠️ It has been abandoned by the administrator
