I have noticed that when I speak Japanese (currently my weakest language, A1) and try to fetch some words, at times my head turns to my second weakest language (currently Finnish, B1).
And it's not the first time! Back in the early days of Finnish, I would revert to French; and same thing happened with German when I was learning French.
Have you noticed a similar pattern when speaking your weakest language?
For people learning #Irish on #Duolingo where do you turn for that extra learning material that it's lacking?
YouTube, books...??? Mostly for grammar help and short stories. There's a few things that I'm noticing with patterns, but I feel like there's a deeper level to it that I'm missing out on.
I'm just starting out on this journey. I'm actually surprised at how much Irish is making sense to me so far, with my mostly Germanic language backgrounds.
"Full fluency" is too vague of a goal imo. It doesn't give you directions on how to get there, nor a clear "victory" when you achieve it. (I'm a native English speaker, but there's always more English I could learn, for example. The learning never ends!)
Im pretty rusty, but would really love to connect with some other learners or speakers of Japanese to practice with! 🙂 #langtoot#language#japanese#日本語#日本
Accent marks blow. English, Hebrew and Russian don’t have any, then I start learning Vietnamese and just typing is such a damn chore even though it uses the Latin alphabet! It can take three keypresses to get a single vowel (two for the consonant đ), get a fat finger error on any of the three and you start again.
I love the way Hmong uses letters at the end of a syllable to indicate tones. Brilliant. #langtoot@languagelovers
Hot take: the focus on exotic features of other languages is orientalizing. Nobody writes dissertations on “the complex politness conventions of tu/vous languages” or “the complex cultural considerations in Western cultures that determine whether to greet someone with a hug, nod, simple handshake, secret handshake, bow, curtsy, or fist bump“ #langtoot@languagelovers
Yesterday I had the crazy thought of attempting the #JLPT N2 next year - even though I’ve only been #learningjapanese for the past 4 months at my own pace, more like a hobby. What’s encouraging is there are quite a lot of resources in #malaysia and the exams aren’t too expensive in our currency. Hmmm if I do end up going forward with this, where should I start? 😂 I’d say my strongest to my weakest points are: kanji, reading, grammar and listening. #languagelearning#langtoot#japanese#language
