Ugh! So #Libby is selling our data, not shocking after they were acquired... but there are alternatives that are below that public libraries can use!

For the Libby #Enshittification background, read https://buttondown.email/ninelives/archive/the-coming-enshittification-of-public-libraries/

For the targeted ad investigation, read https://www.theregister.com/2024/05/18/mystery_of_the_targeted_mobile_ads/

One of them is Library Simplified https://librarysimplified.org/get-started/

The Palace Project looks awesome and is fully accessible, screen reader wise! Librarians should check out https://thepalaceproject.org/platform/

After an online training on for Millennials and Generation Z, I made a mega list on Libby called “Romantasy” and ended up needing arthritis cream on my wrist today with all the mouse work. Overdrive findability is tough. Metadata is scant. Neither author nor genre searches recovered most of these. It’s almost like they want to bury your old content licences.

This is your periodic reminder that publishers and Overdrive (owned by venture vultures KKR) are killing your public libraries with the costs of content for the Libby app. They want $120 for one (1) copy of the Heir of Fire audiobook by Sarah J. Maas. @librarians

? I read Untamed by E.M. Moore because Cate C. Wells recommended it and... well, it's an absorbing and pretty hot story if you like the rejected mate trope, but the world building is absent and/or ridiculous, and the author relied too much on a thesaurus, I think. Might read the second book, might not. Perhaps just to see if maybe we ever find out if shifters are known to the outside world or hidden.

notTheAudience,

I’m listening to “Iron Flame” - my book group decided to do The Empyrean and I’m not hating it (although the slangy tone of the dialogue is a weird note in the world building). After I finished my Clavell re-read, I’m now reading Serena Bell’s “So Close”, the first in her Tierney Bay series, since one of my libraries added that on and I am a Bell completist. @romancelandia @willaful @romancebooks

I want to get away from Amazon, which includes Audible. I‘ve been subscribed to Audible for years and love that new Star Trek books are available there.

My research into alternatives brought me, once more, to what my library has to offer. Well, to make it short, Star Trek wise it‘s an absolute desert. Even through Libby it‘s a wasteland. I will mark all Trek books I’d like to read or listen to on my wishlist now, which, as I understand it, will inform my library that there‘s interest in that book. But let‘s be real here, I doubt there‘s lots of demand for these books, let alone in English, in my region. (Middle of nowhere in Germany)

I also put Patrick Stewart‘s „Make It So“ audio on hold. I‘m number 5 on the list which means a wait of ca. 10 weeks. At least that book is in demand. Maybe it‘s a sign that Trek books may be more in demand as I thought? 🤞

@willaful @romancelandia @romancebooks After finishing "Fire and Ice" (see yesterday's post) I've got a relatively new release from the library on : Lucy Parker's "Codename Charming" which seems like it has been on my radar for ages. I have not yet regretted picking up a Lucy Parker.

We’ve all flipped to the end of a book to make sure that everything will turn out ok for a favorite character, right?

For the first time in my life I’ve just done this with an audiobook: “The Good Sister” by . I’m using the . I dropped a bookmark and then hopped to the last couple of chapters and sampled a few moments so I could be sure that Fern and Wally would be ok. Whew what a relief. Now I can continue to listen stress-free.

Libraries are for everyone - or at least they should be! This National Library Week, join the fight in defense of libraries.
