What a time to be alive!

The evolution of the Mortal Kombat series (blog.playstation.com)

The fighting game genre has many notable franchises. One of the earliest to earn iconic status is Mortal Kombat. It punched its way onto the arcade scene in 1992 and quickly found its way to the home console market, wowing players with at-the-time realistic visuals and controversial over–the–top gore. That controversial...

Mortal Kombat 1 - Official Lin Kuei Trailer (www.youtube.com)

I believe this is the first time seeing Smoke, Rain, and Kung Lao in the game, as well as kameos for Frost, Cyrax, Sektor, Scorpion, and Kung Lao. In the livestream, devs acknowledged that they've received the feedback on the movement speed and are working on it. You can also use kameos for movement, like equipping Kung Lao's...

I PLAYED MORTAL KOMBAT 1! | Hands-On 4K Gameplay & Impressions [Maximilian Dood] (www.youtube.com)

Max has quite notably disliked MK11. While I enjoyed that game a whole lot, I can understand his complaints with it, and this is channeling some of my favorite parts of a game like Skullgirls; or at least, at this early stage, it seems like it could.

With the announcement that Jean Claude Van Damme will be playing Johnny Cage, it's worth looking back at what happened in the first game to prevent this.

It was originally going to be a game idea heavily inspired by Bloodsport, so why did it become an original IP?

The standard version of the tale goes that when Williams contacted Van Damme, he had a pre-existing contract with a video game company to use his likeness.

What this game was and who was the developer has been cause for speculation, but it may not be an accurate rememberance.

According to Roger Sharpe - yes, the pinball guy - who was in charge of licensing for Williams, he was the one tasked with contacting Van Damme's agents.

He says that the reason it never went through is that he was being given the run around, not because of a contract conflict.

Sharpe says afterwards that he convinced John Tobias to develop his own original characters.

Since posting about the excellent Doom 32X hack, someone pointed out there's a great mod of the 32X's Mortal Kombat 2 as well!
I suck horribly at the game, but it looks way better and has more frames of animation. Much more arcade-perfect!
