Two years ago, Dan Akarca & I wondered: Could the various features we observe in brains across species be caused by shared functional, structural & energetic constraints? 🧠⚡️
With our now published spatially embedded RNNs we show this is true!
We are very happy to announce the 4th UCL Annual #NeuroAI Conference, featuring leading speakers at the cutting edge of ML and neuroscience from around the world!

I’ve noticed a strong alignment between those who think that the computer metaphor for the brain makes little sense and those who’ve thought about how the brain might give rise to emotion.
As much as I love all the progress happening in NeuroAI to push our understanding of perception, memory & intelligence forward, I very much think they are right - there’s a crucial swath that doesn’t seem to fit with that agenda.
@NicoleCRust I’m wondering if this is an intrinsic limitation of the #neuroAI/#neuroconnectionist paradigm, or just the result of non-overlap with the fields problem-space — either the kinds of problems ANNs have been used to solve in the past or the field’s current interests.
My bet is the latter and that the metaphor will work just fine when folks start thinking about how to model neuromodulatory systems and making ANNs that need to learn their own goals in complex environments.
Now that I'm moved to neuromatch.social, a new #introduction.
I’m a professor at UPenn who studies memory. I work at the nexus of brain research and computation. I’m also writing a book: When it comes to understanding the brain, what are we trying to achieve? What’s our plan to get there? What challenges do we face?
Writing has deepened my appreciation for community-based progress. I'm excited to be here to participate in, and benefit from, collective intelligence.
I'm also committed to restraining myself from the power of 10K characters. But I will Edit - that is the superpower that we all deserve.
I am a PhD student in Computational #Neuroscience at #Cambridge University. I work on the connection of biological 🧠 and artificial 🤖 intelligence, building neuro-inspired RNNs from prefrontal cortex dynamics and circuit plasticity rules. I work with John Duncan and Matt Botvinick (#Deepmind).
