I was going through some monarch butterfly pics from last summer & came across this beauty taken last August. I'm very concerned about the reports that have come from Mexico about their low numbers this past winter. Hopefully they will bounce back.

  • It is always a wonderful day when you can spot a Monarch butterfly!

Her wings perfectly extended to show off her lovely orange and black colors, she gently rests on a stalk of goldenrod.

Also called the Milkweed butterfly, the Monarch is an endangered North American Butterfly. Loss of habitat and food have made this long distance migratory wonder of nature at risk of disappearing. https://fineartamerica.com/featured/the-monarch-and-the-goldenrod-karen-cook.html

  • I love the common milkweed plant. From Spring to Autumn, it undergoes such a dramatic change. From the green leaves with their stunning blooms in early Spring, to the the development of the seed pods that resemble cucumbers or pickles (I think so) in Summer and then finally in late Autumn, the explosion of the seed pods, with their wispy threads clinging to the seeds waiting to soar on the breeze.

Released this pretty girl today. She hung around the yard for a while before sipping some goldenrod and heading on her way.

I recently released this male monarch that I raised from a caterpillar. He ended up hanging around the yard for three days. It was amazing to see him thrive in the wild and he was even scrapping with some other males.

It's been Monarch Mania around here lately! The most activity I have ever seen in the yard. Of course they're flocking to the meadow blazing stars (Liatris ligulistylis).

This male monarch showed up after the rain this morning. Meadow blazing star and swamp milkweed were his flowers of choice.

Interesting lighting conditions and a cooperative male monarch made for a great photo shoot yesterday afternoon.

I released this handsome male monarch butterfly this afternoon. I was hoping for a better photo, but he immediately flew up in the neighbor's tree.

So far, during the (July 28 - Aug. 6), I have seen a least 2 monarchs and have photographed at least 1 monarch per day. Here's another male in the front yard this afternoon.

There's been a lot of monarch activity on our swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) in the past week.
