Something is clearly happening, as the government is abandoning the normal rules of politics to ram through the cuts. According to media reports, the government is trying to get the restriction to take effect on May Day - a global day of celebration for labour and the labour movement. In recent years we have witnessed a trend where politics is turning into pure nastiness and an attempt to humiliate dissent. It seems to take precedence over actually resolving issues that have a tangible impact on people's lives. There is no rational justification for restrictions to come into force on May Day. The date could just as well be the end of April or the second of May. By restricting the right to strike on May Day, the government is deliberately seeking to insult, humiliate and mock all those people who support the trade union movement and the left. It has come to this.

Today in Labor History June 23, 1947: The anti-worker Taft-Hartley Act was passed, overriding President Harry Truman’s veto. The act rolled back many of the labor protections created by the 1935 Wagner Act. Taft-Hartley weakened unions in numerous ways, including the banning of the General Strike. It also allowed states to exempt themselves from union requirements. Twenty states immediately enacted anti-union open shop laws.
