The celebrations for Ali Bongo Ondimba’s electoral victory did not last long. By the next day, soldiers had invaded the presidency. Shortly afterwards, they announced on national television that the 56-year rule of the Bongo family – Ali took over from his father Omar in 2009 – was over. #alibongo#gabon
Are you missing the experience of #Web1 random meaty information from experts? I'm on a weekly email list from #Gard, "The World's Leading #Shipping Insurer", and I highly recommend it!
It's easy to ignore, but if you feel like clicking in, you can hear about the #coup in #gabon, or the latest in #windPower for #ContainerShips, or the dangers of fumigating grain in transit... And it's all written for people doing work.
If I was a #SpaceOpera writer, or running a #verse or #traveller game, I would have great story seeds from this.
Anyway, they're so web 1.0 that to sign up you need to go to https://www.gard.no/web/frontpage and fill in a form, but I think it's worth it.
“The timing of the coup … and the speed with which the junta is moving suggests this was planned in advance. While there are many legitimate grievances about the vote and Bongo’s rule, that has little to do with the coup attempt in #Gabon.”
Weird article in the #Guardian about #Gabon. Basically swallowing raw the claims of the president's own staff that he is very popular - without mentioning that he was a hereditary dictator, whose dynasty was in power for 56 years. And explicitly claiming that his regime was a democracy.
I know nothing about the coup makers, but going all in behind the Bongo dynasty seems... strange.
There's a coup in #Gabon and I didn't know about it! Mastodon has to fix its news problem otherwise it's beginning to feel like a silo of sorts..... or perhaps its just that the African presence here is very limited?
@dilmandila I’d recommend RSS for your news feed. Depending on social media for it was, in retrospect, probably never a good idea. I knew about #Gabon from several sources on RSS feeds.
