mk30, to Hawaii

this is me showing my nibling how to harvest salt from the shoreline rocks. it hasn't rained for 3 weeks (very unusual for east hawai'i! it's because of El Niño.), so the salt nooks were in peak shape!

every patch tasted just a bit differently!

the story i had heard was: to gather salt at the shoreline, wait for a big storm with big waves. then, wait for everything to completely dry out. then go look for white salt deposits in the depressions in the rocks.

i figured that even though i hadn't remembered a big storm, 3 weeks of zero rain would certainly result in some good salt buildup. i was right!

cliff salt isn't just salty, it tastes like the sea. a friend told me: "it's concentrated mana from the ocean." it's not like eating table salt.

plus, we were just using the tips of our fingers to get a little out of the caves, so we weren't eating it by the tablespoon. we didn't harvest any to take home, we just did taste tests. by the time we'd tried a bunch, we didn't want any more salt.

it's good to know that should the boats ever stop coming to the island, i know where my nearest salt is: a mere 5 miles away, completely downhill. 🌊 🌋

my finger with salt on the tip. in the background is the tiny salt cave that i harvested it from. you can see the white crystalline buildup behind the finger - this is salt.

Brighton, : Call For An International Anti-Repression Gathering

"In the UK as elsewhere, murderous kill with impunity whilst politicians make way for a vast prison building program that will affect the poorest and most marginalised parts of society. Anarchists, activists and environmentalists are targetted as “extremists” and “terrorists” with special police teams designed to infiltrate and dismantle their campaigns and organisations.

Our communities are increasingly turned into open prisons, “a prison society”, through new technologies of social control. It’s time to stop wringing our hands and instead get organised. What do we have in common and can we build a common platform of action and discussion that helps us build a better world."

[edit to add: it was delicious! I might make a few minor adjustments for personal taste next time, but the recipe is good as is :)]

When it comes to meetings, I am told that among my management peers, I have the reputation of having a structure fetish. I insist on an agenda and notes for every meeting (except confidential one-on-ones), and on cross-references to existing documentation, applicable issues tracked in an issue tracker, or wiki pages.

Your thoughts?

@xahteiwi All of them ;-)

It is a tragedy that each and every #gathering of people goes by the umbrella term of "#meeting" now.

There is a huge number of formats we can pick the most suitable from, depending on the intended #outcome. They're requiring different amounts of #ceremony.

I'd rather widen my #facilitation skills than bash the "meeting" straw man.

Morning bounty: allspice berries! Green ones will dry for grinding; purple ones go in muffins or Vickie’s mammee apple jam, or can be mashed fresh to flavor a home-made pumpkin spice latte.

Finally managed to finish the English translation. Still not quite happy with it, but i guess it's okay. I was surprised to notice how difficult it was for me to translate a text i wrote in German to English, don't understand why that is. When i write in English from the start i seem to think differently or something.

Do rules or restrictions never ever have a place in an anarchist or anti-authoritarian setting?

Don't be silly. Consider the following situations.

When there is food at our events it very often at the very least has vegan options, trying not to exclude our vegan comrades. So why can't we wear masks in order not to exclude our endangered (immunocompromised, chronically ill, disabled or cautious) comrades?

Do we ever have to discuss smoking is accepted in indoor settings (except possibly in France)? So what's wrong with installing air filters or wearing a mask to keep the virus count low during a pandemic with an airborne virus?

At our meetings and gatherings homophobic, racist, sexist, white supremacist etc. attitudes and gestures are not tolerated, simply because they are wrong. So why should COVID-denialist and therefore ableist attitudes be tolerated?

If people feel uncomfortable with specific technological solutions, be it because of OpSec or other concerns, we try to find solutions that feel safer (encryption, avoiding tracking etc.). So why can't we find solutions that make our endangered comrades feel safer during our events?
