#CosmicStories blog post by @Tiylaya

Gone (but not forgotten?)

While some science fiction imagines humanity alone in the universe, other stories imagine that life just like our own is plentiful outside our Solar System. One common thread in such stories is the idea of precursor civilisations - ancient races that lived, died and passed out of general knowledge long before humanity took to the stars.

So the final season of just premiered.

The entire series is a mirror of its self with the pivot being the 3rd season when they fix The Burn and bring the scattered federation back together.

So just as season 2 ended with Burnham going forward in time 1,000 years, this season will end with the bad guys winning and using the macguffin to do The Bad Thing thus requiring Book and Burnham to go back in time ~1,000 years so the ship can wait around to grab the tech before the bad guys do.

The spore drive can move in time, Season 1 had the ship coming back from the mirror universe months after they left.

Book and Burnham then take one of the disco's 2 shuttles and fly off to live out their days in obscurity on Kwejian.

This sets up the events of the short trek Calypso where the disco has been stripped of all its future tech and is waiting in a nebula for 1,000 years.

Ooh, I like this new Captain Rayner character.

Always been a Callum Keith Rennie fan, ever since Due South.

As begins its final season, star Sonequa Martin-Green shares her take on some fans that object to her character Michael Burnham's propensity for tears. https://redshirtsalwaysdie.com/posts/sonequa-martin-green-s-perfect-response-to-those-who-think-star-trek-discovery-is-too-emotional-01htq1dev42x

When it comes to ST: Discovery I am very much in the mindset of "Well, I've come this far..."

Early on I defended it, sure it was different, not the Trek we were used to, but that was fine.

I started losing patience from Season 2. The stakes were too big, the solutions to small, and the characters too stubborn in their utter refusal to have an arc involving any kind of development beyond who can produce the greatest litreage of tears. 1/3

@pupether I’m yet to start this final season of #StarTrekDiscovery but the range of negative feeling is interesting. In general, my feeling has been that it’s very pretty but hasn’t quite figured out what story it’s telling our what it wants to be when it grows up. #StarTrekPicard had the same issue, IMO.

Of the recent offerings, #StarTrekPtodigy has actually been my favorite.

But it’s #SciFi and I shall watch, read, etc.

Might have missed it and since it's the title of the first episode of Season 5, I do have to ask:

What is a Red Directive anyway and have they ever mentioned this before on any other occassion?

I’m behind a full season of so I’m positive I’ll probably be spoiled before the end of the series. The sad part though is I don’t think I care.

The show got better near the end of S3 but honestly I still don’t like the way Bernham has treated Saru. The show’s never really felt like to me either, and for my money the best thing to come out of it was Pike and Strange New Worlds.

I know a lot of you out there love it tho, so you do you. I’m happy for ya. Enjoy! 🖖

@gedeonm Totally agree. has a tone and feeling that just doesn’t seem to fit the vibe for me. I really felt like the whole Klingon surgery thing was more fitting of a horror movie.

On DISCO SE05EP01: I love the story and all the callbacks and easter eggs and seeing this cast again, but I still hate the serial format. asks “What if we took the classic TNG 2-parter but made it 10 parts?” Or “What if we made a massive feature film and then just chopped it into 10 slices?” Like, imagine if “Best of Both Worlds” was 10 episodes long with 9 cliffhangers. Meh.

Anxiously awaiting new SNW and LDS,

Now that I’ve seen the first two episodes of the final season of Star Trek Discovery, I have a request for future Star Trek shows: let one of your characters have a few pet rabbits.

Think about it. Rabbits are the perfect spaceship pets.

They’re quiet, only eat plants, don’t need to be walked, and are cute as heck.

I had great plans for a healthy and productive evening at home. I was going to head down to the gym, cook a healthy dinner and do some outstanding life admin.

Then, it came to my attention that the first two episodes of the new season of Star Trek: Discovery are now live on Paramount+ and so everything else has been binned. It’s all-Trek, all evening now.

I don’t make the rules…

It's release day for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5. So far the show has been a mixed bag, but last season was pretty good and I really like the characters, so I'm tentatively hopeful for the final season. Why do I have to have a closing shift at work today?

Today is the day Star Trek: Discovery, THE BEST OF THE NEW 'TREKS*, returns for the final 10-episode tour of her fateful five-year mission. It's been 2 looong years since the last episode aired, but apart from an early scry of some starship screenshots months ago I have resisted every single tiny bit of spoilerific content so I can immerse myself fully unprepared for the delights to come.

Here's hoping it is 10 episodes of Trek perfection, a fitting send-off for (and from) a crew and cast I've come to love.

I'm ready for this on a cellular level: Let's Fly!

Friends,
it's almost here: Season 5 of DISCO! (Can you believe it?!)

Not everyone can watch right when the episode drops. Therefore I am asking us all to please keep our episode discussions, especially those containing spoilers, behind a content warning.

On Mastodon there should be a little exclamation mark icon (Edit: or simply the letters "CW") somewhere in the text compose box. Hit it and give your content a title, something like "Star Trek: Discovery S5E01".
On *key instances that icon is a stylised eye with a line crossing through it.
It's easy to use and people will love you for using it.

Thank you! 🪩❤️

Wow - this is the most powerful, profound description I’ve yet seen about Michael Burnham’s journey!

(From a new interview with Sonequa in Explorer)

…We start to see the confrontation. We spend a great deal of time in that confrontation phase where, "Now it is time for me to take a look. Now it is time for me to open the attic of my heart and figure out what's in here, figure out what's really been driving me, that it actually hasn't been about true purpose. It's been about fulfiling someone else's expectations for me. It's been about seeking and gaining approval. It's been about proving myself. It's been about absolution." That whole confrontation phase lasted a long time. All the stones were turned. It was rough, ugly, and full of tears. Then we come to the beginning of self-actualization with this woman. I'm so grateful I was able to tell the story of this Black woman being able to fall forward, because when you zoom out you see the beauty and the benefit of it, how everyone deserves second chances. That's when you can really see someone's potential, if you allow them to make those mistakes and learn from chem, so then that actualization begins. From that point until toward the end of the series, you're seeing that continue to expand and deepen, to where now - as we're coming into this last season - you see a more subtle Burnham than ever before. You see a Burnham who knows who she is, why she's here, and has more to learn. She absolutely has more to learn. Don't we all? At the same time, she had become settled in a way that... it's amazing that we get to see it. We get to see her get to that place.

Remember that time where clarified there are a bunch of different mirror universes, not just the one? I want the crew to get transported to the place that considers the prime universe to be their evil doppels.
