This is my notifications feed. The message at the top is in fact an answer to the one below. But since you very often use "public" when replying, we get both in notifications. Using unlisted as you just did only makes it not pop up in feeds
@benjaminhollon Ah! I actually thought unlisted might go to hashtag feeds. Though reading the documentation just now it says “Your post will not appear in Mastodon’s public timelines.” Makes sense that hashtag feeds are counted as public timelines. Duh.
It's pretty much the same with the "unlisted" feature. Does what it is described to do, but does not do what users intuitively "know" it will do based on experience with other applications and protocols.
There's a word for the adventurous products which work the opposite of the way every other similar widget works: broken.
