It’s a bit telling that the “affordable” example they provided in Sydney was $400 per week! Hardly affordable for low income people. I get that it’s better than the mean, but still very high in comparison to a minimum wage or job seeker.
Screening patients for #COVID & wearing well fitting masks in health care settings is such an obvious & effective intervention I could not believe it when health services decided they were no longer necessary. Disregarding these sensible precautions has led to so much avoidable suffering.
So many of us are vulnerable. Please, let’s be kind to each other.
This one presses all my ‘I was an undx & unsupported #autistic child & an undx & unsupported parent of undx & unsupported #autistic kids’ buttons also. I hated school! It was totally overwhelming & full of impenetrable rules & I was bullied & friendless from start to finish. I tried so hard to avoid & refuse but was repeatedly forced to go. When my kids had the same experience I did the same to them.
We had no way to make sense of this experience then except as shame & failure. And the stigma for parents was awful. Now we can see this aversion & avoidance as overwhelm resulting from an inability to filter sensory & other input, & the inevitable bullying we endure as other kids’ response to our inability to figure out the social rules, we can understand our experience more kindly. And maybe even find ways to make school a safe space for everyone.
This account of a teenager & his family is heartbreaking 💔.
Families raising kids who have violent meltdowns struggle to find support. Kids like this are acutely vulnerable to the influence of anyone who is kind to them & any group in which they find acceptance. For those of us who experience meltdowns, learning to understand & manage our overwhelm & the eruptions it leads to is a lifelong journey. For most of us it’s full of failure & shame. Where & how can we find acceptance & love? How can we learn to be gentle with ourselves?
I think many #autistic folk, especially those of us who grew up undiagnosed & unsupported then raised similarly undx, distressed, overwhelmed & volatile autistic kids while unable to find help, would shudder with recognition at elements of this tragic story.
@janisf@26pglt@actuallyautistic the GI is an ongoing process because just as there aren't many ASD-friendly therapists, there's almost no ASD-friendly GPOs or GI specialists. So I get told "you're not reporting symptoms I recogise in a way I'm comfortable hearing so I can't help you".
Laura Tingle on how Justice Lee’s findings sit within the context of Australia’s culture of normalised violence towards women & how the words of some political leaders enable & sustain this.
Local materials for local conditions. Beautiful & practical architecture.
I’d far rather spend time in buildings that breathe with the elements & allow airflow than ones that are sealed & isolated from what’s outside. Sounds & scents convey so much.
This example shows how even in extreme conditions, such design can work.
A huge #OH&S issue for staff as well as life threatening for patients.
What’s so hard about improving ventilation & air quality, routine testing, paid leave, isolating covid patients & using n95 masks? We would all be so much safer.
Major abrogation of responsibility in public health #covid
Spacious mind, inclusive heart: contemplations for the new year 🐲
I wish this kindness for all of us, welcoming our diversity & learning from each other. Thank you all for being here, esp my #ActuallyAutistic & #neurodivergent friends & those who care for us. We’re learning together.
#Autistic & seeking well informed mental heath care? Good luck with that.
I’m 67 & yet to find it. Even at specialist clinics I’ve never found a therapist who knows the research as well as I do, let alone understands what it’s like to live as an undx nd person- raised by an undx autistic mother, having raised undx nd kids -into late adulthood.
