An online friend announced a few days ago that her son, diagnosed with ADHD a few months ago, has been also diagnosed as autistic and with Tourette syndrome. It took 3 years but I’m happy for him and his mum because they finally know! And she thinks that his dad he’s probably autistic too because it runs in the family. 😉
This could be the connection between Ehlers-Danlos and neurodivergence. (People with EDS, like me, are 7 times as likely to be autistic and 5 times as likely to have ADHD -- also like me.)
@pathfinder I think fear also drives 'gatekeeping'. You can't be this 'because', or that 'because', is probably internalised ableism, and the cliquiness of allistic behaviour. The I-won't-let-you-join-my-club kind of thing.
Also, there is no rule that Autists have to like each other, or agree 100% of the time. #neurodivergence@ScruffyDux@ashleyspencer@actuallyautistic
Many autistic children thrive on routine and predictability, which can make vacations challenging for them. Here's a story from USA Today with tips on how to plan a trip, choose an airline that provides accommodations for autistic children, and details on what to expect from an autism-certified resort.
@kkffoo and others highlighted to us that the puzzle piece originally used to illustrate this story is an offensive analogy to some autistic people. Here is an explanation as to why. The publication has now changed the image in response to this feedback. Thank you all.
Random question for anyone interested, has anyone read or heard about the hunter-gatherer theory regarding ADHD traits? Recently stumbled upon it and read some into it and it's rather pretty interesting.
Please, #bookstodon and everyone else , recommend your very favorite books and other #information to me. I'll read anything, audio or ebook or maybe even paper #book, #website or recurring graphics or whatever.
Feed me.
Re-plugging an old article that my friend, mentee and former colleague Mythri Prabhakara wrote about learning digital security over approximately 8 months while navigating her #neurodivergence and other intersectional identities, and a pandemic to boot.
(I’ve shared an archived link because the footnotes and text currently displaying are a bit weird.)
Imagine being the guy (gn) who arbitrarily decided that ADHD and autism must be mutually exclusive and getting the whole posse of psychs to go along with it for decades, only to find that about 75% of people with one also have the other?? So embarrassing 🙈
“In forty years of medical practice, I have found only two types of non-pharmaceutical 'therapy' to be vitally important for patients with chronic neurological diseases: music and gardens.”
Wow! Scottish government have an open consultation on a new bill to provide targetted protection and support for people with #Autism and #Neurodivergence. The consultation has been open since December (yes, I missed the announcement) and closes on 21st April, so in three weeks.
This is something which people in Scotland with autism and/or neurodivergence should read and should respond to!
My problem is, I am a guy who likes the idea of doing so many things, but in reality only has the energy or motivation to want about doing those things rather than actually doing them.😩
