Screening patients for & wearing well fitting masks in health care settings is such an obvious & effective intervention I could not believe it when health services decided they were no longer necessary. Disregarding these sensible precautions has led to so much avoidable suffering.

So many of us are vulnerable. Please, let’s be kind to each other.

This one presses all my ‘I was an undx & unsupported child & an undx & unsupported parent of undx & unsupported kids’ buttons also. I hated school! It was totally overwhelming & full of impenetrable rules & I was bullied & friendless from start to finish. I tried so hard to avoid & refuse but was repeatedly forced to go. When my kids had the same experience I did the same to them.

We had no way to make sense of this experience then except as shame & failure. And the stigma for parents was awful. Now we can see this aversion & avoidance as overwhelm resulting from an inability to filter sensory & other input, & the inevitable bullying we endure as other kids’ response to our inability to figure out the social rules, we can understand our experience more kindly. And maybe even find ways to make school a safe space for everyone.

Let’s think about in terms of differences in processing sensory & other information, & be kinder to our kids, & ourselves.

This account of a teenager & his family is heartbreaking 💔.

Families raising kids who have violent meltdowns struggle to find support. Kids like this are acutely vulnerable to the influence of anyone who is kind to them & any group in which they find acceptance. For those of us who experience meltdowns, learning to understand & manage our overwhelm & the eruptions it leads to is a lifelong journey. For most of us it’s full of failure & shame. Where & how can we find acceptance & love? How can we learn to be gentle with ourselves?

I think many #autistic folk, especially those of us who grew up undiagnosed & unsupported then raised similarly undx, distressed, overwhelmed & volatile autistic kids while unable to find help, would shudder with recognition at elements of this tragic story.

My heart goes out to this family ❤️‍🩹 @actuallyautistic

Local materials for local conditions. Beautiful & practical architecture.

I’d far rather spend time in buildings that breathe with the elements & allow airflow than ones that are sealed & isolated from what’s outside. Sounds & scents convey so much.

This example shows how even in extreme conditions, such design can work.

What’s so hard about improving ventilation & air quality, routine testing, paid leave, isolating covid patients & using n95 masks? We would all be so much safer.

is a familiar experience for many folk. Associated with acute interoception & brain activation across multiple systems, it can make what is everyday normal for others acute misery for us.

For me the worst is high frequencies esp from radio or other small devices, even or especially with the volume turned low. These sounds drive me to fury, desperation for escape & eventually meltdown.

A responsible government would regulate indoor air quality, advise mask use as appropriate & support isolating when sick.

In the absence of leadership, as individuals we can act to protect ourselves & others from . Let’s normalise this. It’s not hard.

Hating on vulnerable groups is a political strategy bc it works. When a population is being screwed, distract them by pushing them to hate each other.

It’s a strategy of Empire: British did it in America to divide Irish from African & in India to divide Hindu from Muslim.

Why do we fall for this so often?

The parallel with mask wearing is obvious.
