From Wikipedia

The Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) is an American anti-immigration think tank. It favors far lower immigration numbers and produces analyses to further those views. The CIS was founded by historian Otis L. Graham and eugenicist and white nationalist John Tanton in 1985 as a spin-off of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). It is one of a number of anti-immigration organizations founded by Tanton, along with FAIR and NumbersUSA.

Reports published by CIS have been disputed by scholars on immigration, fact-checkers and news outlets, and immigration-research organizations. The organization had significant influence within the Trump administration,[3] which cited the group’s work to defend its immigration policies.[4] The Southern Poverty Law Center designated CIS as a hate group with ties to the American nativist movement.[5] The CIS sued the SPLC over the designation, but the lawsuit was dismissed.

AFKBRBChocolate,

Hi Emma! I’m not in that area or LGBTQ+, just an ally, and an old guy with paternal instincts, and I wanted to make sure that you stay safe. Lemmy seems much more progressive on average than most online spaces, but like anywhere there are predator types here too. Please make sure that any first meets you do are in public, safe spaces.

I hope you meet some great people that help you feel less isolated. Good luck!

AFKBRBChocolate,

Seems like “theologian” undersells it. I mean, he was, but he was also an organist, musicologist, writer, humanitarian, philosopher, and physician.

(Schweitzer, not the cat)

AFKBRBChocolate,

Thanks for that. Even more detail:

The bighead carp were introduced in 1992 as a part of a national study done to examine if the species could be effective in reducing nuisance algal plaguing ponds. The fish were to be removed at the conclusion of the study in 1995, however bighead carp persisted in the waters.

Sounds like they forgot they were there. So those fish were 32+ years old? I wonder if they were causing any problems. Apparently weren’t breeding - they didn’t say why (either sterilized or only one gender, I’d guess).

AFKBRBChocolate,

I literally just stuck my foot out from the covers as I was clicking this link. And it didn’t even sink in that I had done that until I clicked “next.” When I realized, I had to come back and post this - you’re welcome.

AFKBRBChocolate,

Can I just say, in this era when news organizations will replace the vowels in cus words with asterisks, I appreciate The Guardian making sure I know that “POS” means “piece of shit.”

Can someone ID this comic strip? (lemmy.world)

Some time ago, I pulled this sticker off our old fridge before we got rid of it and put it onto my PC’s side panel (don’t ask me why, I guess I thought it looked cool). I don’t exactly know where it came from or who put it there, although I suspect it was put there by a Australian relative that was visiting us a long time...

AFKBRBChocolate,

This comment has the whole quote. It’s usually a mistake to try and make sense out of what he says, but it kind of looks like he’s trying to invoke the image of the cannibalistic serial killer and then saying that’s the kind of criminal we’re releasing.

AFKBRBChocolate,

Okay, but now I want to chase an ice cream truck with a convoy of vehicles…

AFKBRBChocolate,

Just got back from the Hoh rainforest, so got to appreciate some of these up close.

AFKBRBChocolate,

I wonder how much of this change is the result of the whole world saying “Well, he’s 18 and getting into politics - the gloves are off now.” Wouldn’t surprise me if it was his mom’s doing. I don’t like her, but good on her if she pulled the plug on this.

What's a (fiction) book that's written intimately and will make me feel awe?

I read Martin McInnes’s In Ascension recently. What I loved about it is that it felt both intimate and sweeping. Intimate in the sense of going deep into the protagonist’s thoughts and feelings; sweeping in the nature of the things she thinks and does. Discovering and investigating things beyond all human knowledge,...

AFKBRBChocolate,

If you liked Annihilation, you might enjoy Leech, by Hiring Ennes. It’s not the same at all, but kind of has a similar feel. Very unusual plot, very well told story.

spoilerHelter Skelter by Mötley Crüe When I get to the bottom I go back to the top of the slide I get to the top and I go for a ride I get to the bottom and I see you again I see you again Do you, don’t you want me to love you I’m coming down fast but I’m miles above you Oh tell me tell me tell me come on tell me the...

AFKBRBChocolate,

I guess it’s also Helter Skelter by The Beatles, since the lyrics are the same.

AFKBRBChocolate,

I am no expert here, but when I was single I had a pothos that I kept forgetting about until it looked completely dead. I would always figure that was the end of it, but I’d go back to watering like normal and it always came back. I named it Lazarus (the guy in the bible that Jesus brings back from the dead).

I won’t say it was the best looking plant after that treatment, but it did live. I’d let it dry to the point where you’d normally water it, then go back to normal if it survives. Good luck!

AFKBRBChocolate,

I’ve seen a few of them in the wild now and each time I’m struck by how cartoonishly awful they look. Somehow the pictures don’t do them justice - they’re worse than that. They always remind me of those “futuristic” cars they put in low budget 80s sci-fi movies.

AFKBRBChocolate,

Exactly. They even seem to drive like those kinds of things - like the suspension wasn’t made for the extra weight - but maybe that’s just my brain extending the impression.

AFKBRBChocolate,

Isn’t that crazy? I’ve seen other people say that, but you just don’t get it until you’ve seen one. I feel like the astronauts who say they can’t really describe the experience of seeing the earth from space because the pictures don’t do it justice, except this is in a bad way.

AFKBRBChocolate,

Years ago I was walking through a park area of UC Berkeley while on vacation and this squirrel walked right in front of me and stood there, so I stopped and watched it. I realized I had some food in my backpack and there might be something squirrel-appropriate, so I very slowly took it off and opened it up, hoping the squirrel wouldn’t get scared and run away. I found something - like a grape or something, don’t remember what - and got it out to toss to the squirrel, but when he saw it he ran up my pants leg and stopped at about my waist. Scared the crap out of me. I held out the food and he took it with one hand, stuck it in his mouth, and ran away.

That’s when I learned that there are apparently tame squirrels all around Berkeley.

AFKBRBChocolate,

I feel sorry for that hyena

AFKBRBChocolate,

Necessary in public if you insist on letting a hyena as a pet. I didn’t think you should keep a hyena as a pet.

Notes from a year of reading science fiction and fantasy [potentially minor spoilers]

Below are books I’ve read over the last year, with notes about on what I thought of them. I started this list just to remind me what the books were about and if I thought they were worth reading. As the year went on, my notes became a little more substantial. The list was for me, but I thought I’d share in case it’s useful...

AFKBRBChocolate,

Off hand, the only Stephenson novels I can think of that I’ve read are Snow crash, Seveneves, and Fall. All of them are excellent, but they’re very different from each other, so it’s hard to think of another author that’s similar.

All that being said, you might try Project Hail Mary, by Weir, and maybe Saturn’s Children by Stross.
