This sweet little otter popped up in the marsh just in time for #WorldWetlandsDay! Hoping we can do more to protect these important ecosystems.

Abibliophobia,

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon I’m halfway through Happy All the Time by Laurie Colwin and listening to Deacon King Kong by James McBride. I’m struggling to connect with the first book but finding the second a very engrossing listen.

Abibliophobia,

@jillrhudy @kimlockhartga @bookstodon This is my first James McBride book, but his writing is so divine that I now need to read all the rest!

saralobkovich, to movies

I am mostly off until Friday, and need some entertainment recommendations!

I like quirky female protagonist fiction, sci-fi, and fantasy books (especially with autistic / autistic-coded characters).

For movies I love political intrigue and fun / witty action adventure movies.

Bonus points for international / non-US movies / authors / settings.

Thank you in advance, Mastodon ❤️🙏🏼

Abibliophobia,

@jonobie @saralobkovich I recommend An Unkindness of Ghosts as well! It is dark, but I loved the non-neurotypical main character.

My September reads:

  • The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
  • Go, Went, Gone by Jenny Erpenbeck
  • The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
  • The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton
  • The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan

Although a slower month for me, I loved House in the Cerulean Sea, Long Way to a Small Angry Planet, and Go, Went, Gone. What was your favorite read last month?

September is my favorite time in the marsh, partly because I get to watch red-winged blackbirds (and sometimes the elusive sora) eat the wild rice.

Abibliophobia,

@CindySue @bookstodon This weekend I’m hoping to finish The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Becky Chambers) and start Go, Went, Gone (Jenny Erpenbeck). I’m listening to The Luminaries but it’s too long and I’m slowing down. So I’ll probably still be listening to it next week too.

Private
Abibliophobia,

@jillrhudy @bookstodon Ooh I’ll join in! I sadly have not read Octavia Butler either. I own both Parable of the Sower and Kindred so can start with one of those.

Spending hours in the blistering, humid heat pulling invasive Japanese stilt grass is a miserable experience. So I’m posting a picture a native plant I recently found to help keep me motivated, the lovely jewelweed.

You've heard the saying "God laughs at your plans." Well, I had planned to go shopping on Saturday, at the biggest used book emporium I could find, but I got deathly ill late on Friday night and I'm just now crawling out of it.

So, today, we have chosen a vintage book shop owned by women (bonus points) and I hope they're ready for us. They have 80,000 used books and collectibles. "Jeeves, my shopping cart!" It's like letting us loose in a candy store.

I made a list of authors whose books I still do not own. I might have gotten carried away. 😁
@bookstodon

Abibliophobia,

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon Oh no! I hope you’re feeling better and have a great day buying books. That’s quite a list!

My wife's friends are all talking about The Alice Network and how good it is. I never made the connection between that book and The Huntress, which I just started after having it on my TBR for the past four years, until I saw the cover of The Huntress up close.

Only about an hour into the 19 hour , but liking it so far. This is going to take a while. 🙄

@bookstodon

Abibliophobia,

@dbsalk @bookstodon I liked both The Alice Network and The Huntress, but I think I enjoyed the latter a tad bit more. Happy listening!

Abibliophobia,

@bookstodon It was another solid month where I really enjoyed most of what I read. My favorite was Elena Knows, followed by Island of a Thousand Mirrors, Convenience Store Woman, and Circe.

Private
Abibliophobia,

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon My favorite book I read in August is Elena Knows by Claudia Piñeiro. A short but good book examining family relationships, aging, and living with a crippling disease and the impact it has on caretakers.

Tonight I'm turning off the phone and reading The Wild Robot by Peter Brown because I'm more interested in it than my daughter. It's OK to read kids #books as an adult right?

@bookstodon #Bookstodon #KidLit

Abibliophobia,

@willelm @bookstodon It’s ok! I was halfway through reading The Girl Who Drank the Moon with my son when he decided he’d rather read Dogman, so now I plan to finish it myself.

Abibliophobia,

@sarahmatthews @bookstodon Leonard and Hungry Paul was one of my favorite reads last year! I like how this published focuses on quality - I’m excited to try more of their books.
