#writerscoffeeclub 24. What websites do you rely on most to help you with your writing?
Really just Wikipedia and Google. That usually brings me to a lot of different sites for synonyms or descriptions or general information but I don't know what specific sites they are.
#writerscoffeeclub Feb1. Intro update: Shameless Self Promotion. Tell us about yourself, published work, WIP or anything else people should know.
Hello, I'm Will. I write low fantasy books. I have one novel nearly done, it's with beta readers now, and I hope to get the final edits on that soon then publish it one way or another. In the meantime, I'm working on the sequel to that book.
#writerscoffeeclub Jan22. Have you ever used storyboarding? When and how?
Certainly not an entire novel or even an entire scene. Probably the closest I've come to something like this is when writing a scene where the characters' location relative to themselves or something else is important, I will sketch the positions on a sheet of paper to make sure the movements make sense.
#WritersCoffeeClub Dec9. How would you write an online chat or text message conversation in your novel?
It hasn't come up for me so I'm not sure how I would do it. I'm glad to see everyone here has figured out some good options so I don't have to solve this issue. Thanks! ๐๐.
Hi, I'm an as-of-yet unpublished YA author and high school math teacher who just joined Mastodon. I'm looking out for suggestions of who to follow in the writing/teaching community!
#WritersCoffeeClub Nov20. Do you have an author's website specifically for promoting your writing?
No, though I have thought about it recently. It just seems like a waste without a finished book.
And I'm really not sure how necessary it is anymore. I think you could do more direct promotion for your writing on social media. Maybe you want to have something come up when someone googles you, but at that point they have already seen you somewhere. Just not sure.
@NaraMoore True snd I've been convinced by hearing others' opinions on it. But maybe I'm not ready to spend any money on it until I actually have a book completed
@Lionesslady@bookstodon
No specific timeline, though if possible, I'd prefer to have it by the end of the year. Looking for any comments one would have. It has gone through a few drafts at this point so I'm more interested in pacing, whether there is any pressure to keep reading, do the arcs work and if payoffs feel earned. More plot/character focused, but anything is welcomed.
#WritersCoffeeClub Nov13. Whatโs the hardest emotion for you to write?
Confusion. Because, for me, it's hard to get the physical manifestation of it. Yes, I can explain why the character thought something different or set up an expectation that is not met but those can both get wordy for a single emotional experience. I guess I feel like I have to "tell" confusion rather than "show" it
#WritersCoffeeClub Oct 30. Did the education system inspire you or put you off writing?
Both. I took a few creative writing classes in college and always received average to poor grades. I remember very clearly feeling like I had no skill for it and had no way to develop that skill.
But education opened my eyes to so many wonderful stories. I don't think I would have been interested in writing otherwise.
#WritersCoffeeClub Oct 19. As a writer, do you always apply the three act structure? Why/why not?
Nope. Not that I intentionally try to avoid it but it just doesn't seem to fit the story I want to tell. Maybe it's the way I write but I'm not worried about trying to build the plot so it fits a certain progression. The characters act and the plot follows and on it goes.
#WritersCoffeeClub Sept 23. Do you read your drafts aloud? How does this help?
Some of them, yes. It's mainly to see how a scene flows or if the dialogue has a nice rhythm to it. I think it helps catch spots where my writing can get wordy and helps find where some dialogue doesn't sound appropriate for the character or doesn't work for another reason
#WritersCoffeeClub Book promotion. I think I'm in about the same situation as others I've read today. Self-promotion is hard. I think most of us would like to do the writing bit and hand over the promotion piece to someone else. I can't picture myself aggressively promoting. Maybe a reverse psychology campaign of "you probably wouldn't like it." More seriously, I think my first step (after actually publishing something) is to identify an audience, then figure out where they look for books.
@Saposcat I'm beginning to notice a trend with these posts today ๐ . I keep waiting for someone to post the answers but it sounds like we're all in the same boat
@Saposcat@courtcan I also wonder how much of it comes down to luck. Like even for people who have been successful, are they doing something different or just getting lucky with it?
Lord of the Rings
Slaughterhouse 5
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell

@TheSurrealAri@bookstadon Yeah, I didn't necessarily do all my favorites but I tried to think of books I've read a lot or seem to always go back to for one reason or another. But you're right, it was always going to feel like I was leaving out books because there's just too many good ones to leave at 13.

@philip_cardella@bookstodon I haven't and I know I should but I just don't have the time, 2 young kids take that all up. Maybe I'll get around to it someday but I like that I can read some of the stories
@philip_cardella@bookstodon this is great, I'll check it out and maybe get caught up without watching every episode. Though that goes against my more obsessive desires
@philip_cardella@bookstodon Yeah I remember seeing that when I looked into it, but still I want to see everything. What if I miss some easter egg or something? I don't want to be out of the loop. ๐ Just gotta keep those tendencies in check now
