So I guess federation is DOA, eh? I suspect it's one of those things that they kept in their back pocket to roll out if they ended up being "too" successful? To combat anti-trust, monopolistic legislation. But instead the opposite has happened and Threads is failing miserably. Sounds like they just rushed a half-baked product out the door to capitalize on Musk's BS.

marqle,

@AudraTran

It definitely seems to have failed and it's a new kind of failure to. I can't remember the last time a market leader launched a complete failure.

The only recent exception I can think of is Apple with those VR headsets, but that was mostly because they priced them so high they looked like extortionists and people recoiled.

There's the distinct possibility that they were just testing the waters, a small team allowed to launch a test balloon. How much did they invest? How big was their promise re:Threads? How worried are shareholders now?

Maybe we just saw a prototype, not even a MVP. That Meta thinks it can afford such approach in a completely new business domain. Possibly they can.

In such light Threads is a massive success. Xilling blow to Elon possible. And the real release yet to come.

Can you tell me what is @spacehost without giving you my email address?

spacehost,

@AudraTran @spacehost_help

SpaceHost is fully managed hosting for all the Fediverse.

With a few clicks, you can have a Fediverse server running in under 5 minutes.

You can create your own identity server on the Fediverse. Or you can create your own community.

You choose what Fediverse software you want — Akkoma, Castopod, Firefish, Friendica, Lemmy, Mastodon, Pixelfed, Pleroma, etc.

SpaceHost deals with all the maintenance, all the upgrades, all the backups, etc — so you don't have to.

I'm officially done with . @protonvpn quit working. I have no idea how to fix it. Tried to uninstall it from the software pane but it just...doesn't. It acts like it's uninstalled, but its not. The killswitch, however, is still on, with no way to disable it. I can no longer access internet from @fedora. All support documentation sends me into the terminal. The commands return a generic error. I don't have time for this. Not looking for support, just giving feedback.

@AudraTran I quit Linux a few years ago for similar reasons. I just got sick of having to constantly troubleshoot issues.

Moved to MacOS and been very happy, albeit probably less private, but it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make to just get shit done.

@feditips @fediverse Is there a Fedi version of something like Facebook Groups? Social circles for a specific topic? Calckey looks like it has something similar but they are currently not federated and also I've found the platform in general to be very unstable.

@trashpanda_x/friendica @AudraTran

Friendica's groups are similar to Guppe or Chirp.

I think the comparison is because the Friendica interface resembles Facebook's older interface from about 5-10 years ago, and it has features like photo albums and calendars.

petrescatraian,

@feditips Yea. Pretty much this is how it looks. An arguably better interface than the current one. There are also servers that have better looking themes, such as social.trom.tf/

Is also able to create groups?

Thinking I want to build my first personal home server. I have a DS220j but I'm thinking it's probably not adequate for Plex transcoding, among other tasks. I have a spare 2700x and 16GB DDR4, and also a 2060 Super (does a server benefit from a GPU?). Looking for any advice would be willing to share regarding hardware and software solutions.

kwf,
@kwf@social.afront.org avatar

@AudraTran a GPU can definitely be useful for Plex transcoding if set up correctly. I know absolutely nothing about the details of it, but know that my friend groups Plex server got a GPU upgrade

Drew,
@Drew@urbanists.social avatar

@schizanon @AudraTran I don't think the j models can transcode; I think you need a + model.

@AntennaPod How do I get the app to show the name of the podcast in my "Episodes" queue. I'm getting a bunch of episodes in there and I have no idea who is publishing them.

AntennaPod,
@AntennaPod@fosstodon.org avatar

@AudraTran Hi there! There's no option for that specifically, but there's another solution: in the Settings you can go to User Interface and then disable Use Episode Cover (3rd from the top). Then you'll see the Podcast covers, which often are a bit more recognisable.
Hope that helps!
