The airport ia a brain trap for me. While the routine is getting easier, I still inevitably ask questions or blurt something out that get me into a situation that causes delays—especially through TSA. Sometimes this causes unexpected laughter and other times not so much. @actuallyautistic

@EVDHmn @actuallyautistic Absolutely. The airport and boarder crossings interactions overwhelm and unnerve me in a different way than the everyday brain traps—likely because there is a power imbalance and higher stakes with misunderstandings.

I’m at conference this week. Someone laid out infinity pins with a nice unsigned note. Thank you!

Conferences can be difficult for me though I keep coming back to try. Every year I get a little better at it and a lot more comfortable with the environment (though I’ll admit to retracting back into my room between many panels). I’ve support and made a few good friends over the last few years around a mutual passion. @audhd @actuallyautistic

@skaeth It really was! If it was you, thank you!

Been looking at various apps to help me mitigate my ADHD-incurred forgetfulness.

I stg it's getting worse with age 😂

Picked up Any.do for a first run at it. Seems nice enough, has task lists, Kanban Boards (which I really like for managing tasks for degree assignments), and works on Android, Windows and the web.

That's not to say there's something even better out there...

Anyone using something that helps them in dealing with inattentive symptoms?

Be nice to see alternatives 😄

@Sar I use a modified version of HB90 which is geared toward authors and then I just applied it broadly. I don’t think it would have worked for me had my spouse and I dedicated a small dinner tray table by my desk where only my planner and preferred pens can go. DOOM piles are not allowed on the planner stand—hard to honor, but 9 months later it’s greatly improved my ability to identify needs and carry them out. @Adhdinos

Late-Identified A Starter Workbook—beginner's tool for adults—has been out for 6 months! Check it out, & if you already have, consider leaving a review. Thank you!

Does telling an allistic person you're ever help improve communication? Over and over, I let people know I'm autistic in hopes it will help, but it never makes things better. It seems like no one wants to do the reading, or to make an effort to even meet me halfway. The main reactions I get when I disclose fall into these categories:

  • Ignore it entirely and just keep on like I'm not autistic.
  • Say I'm nothing like their 10 year old nephew who has .
  • Assume that since we're friends it doesn't matter, because friendship is magic and will enable me to "overcome my autism" with them if I am just motivated enough, and if they aren't special enough for me to do that then I don't really value them as a friend.
  • Give advice on how I can mask better for their comfort and convenience, like I haven't spent my whole life becoming expert on that.
  • Try to be accommodating without taking the time to learn what is helpful and what is just going to make things worse.
  • Infantilize me and treat me like a child or an intellectually disabled person.
  • Give up on me because autistic people are too hard to deal with.
  • No reaction, because most people don't know anything about autism. They don't even understand that I'm doing all the work to bridge the communication gap, or that they could do anything to help, or even cut me some slack when I fail.

I do have a couple allistic friends who accommodate me enough to maintain a decent relationship, but they are rare and special. And we had somehow worked that out before I knew I was even, so telling them still didn't change much.

Has anyone had communication improve by telling someone you're autistic? Or is that just a fantasy?

BZBrainz,
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@joshsusser No, I haven’t found telling people I’m improves communication due to a poor general public understanding of —or the breadth of what the term encompasses. Instead, if I need to have this conversation, I will focus it around my specific communication needs or traits.

nhan, to random

I've seen a few accounts on Mastodon that have the hashtag and I'm a bit confused. Does it convey a different message compared to having an hashtag?

BZBrainz,
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@actuallyautistic
@nhan I think it depends on the context. Here is my understanding of this hashtag and I welcome others to chime in or chase the hashtag back to the controversy. I have been told that was originally pushed by the organization speaks to reframe the online conversion on what “real autism looks like.” The response was not as intended and the autistic community interested in reclaiming it did so.

I was privy to an interesting convo today on different people’s complex feelings around the term vs . I know people who passionately prefer one, both, or an alternative non-medical umbrella term to describe their unique neurotype when not using specific language from medical books or the DSM-5.

Please note, I am not using these as synonyms for ADHD/ASD—I am tagging groups I belong to & enjoy engaging with. @actuallyautistic @Adhdinos

BZBrainz,
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@Yana_yz @actuallyautistic @Adhdinos I’ve always interpreted it as a term for neurodivergent people that is used with and by neurodivergent people. While I’m less likely to say Neurospicy, I respect it’s use and love language as it changes. Do you find that it is used more with close circles or with fellow Neurospicy individuals? As always, no pressure to answer.

I'm asking for help. If you have the spoons to spare, could you help me find a replacement for this ceramic dish? I am hunting for an exact pattern match—"The Blueberry Plate," my 8 yr old niece's favorite dish. She accidentally dropped her plate while trying to get it to the sink. 16P Proximal Deletion Syndrome, another type of neurodivergence in my family, can make muscle tone, coordination, and proprioception difficult. THANK YOU!

BZBrainz,
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@bransonturner thank you!! I will do this now. I’ve got more info on the plate and I hope they can help.

BZBrainz,
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@Tooden @swordplay @Adhdinos @actuallyautistic I’ve narrowed it down and found the brand. I reached out to the company to see if they had more info THEN tagged them in a video. I’m going to find it.

BZBrainz,
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@swordplay @Adhdinos @actuallyautistic I’m going to tuck this idea away. If I don’t find it within a few days, I will do this. It will hopefully help my niece and support an artist too.

BZBrainz,
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@Tooden @swordplay @Adhdinos @actuallyautistic I did find the manufacturer! Gibson Home. Pretty ubiquitous… except for what I’m hunting for. I asked my sister to pull out the pieces and send me photos then reached out to the company to see if they could give me any more leads.

BZBrainz,
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@Htaggert @actuallyautistic @Adhdinos Thank you! The manufacture was able to identify the pattern and now I’m just waiting for someone to post one. ♥️

    @estellechauvelin @actuallyautistic @Adhdinos @audhd I feel that too! I find that I’m not usually directly funny, but I do tend to make people laugh by how I say them. It’s unintentional. Is that true for you too?
