Sometimes I bookmark social media posts that I want to respond to but need additional time to consider because my understanding is still unfolding. I may look through the dictionary or urban dictionary, try to find further social context, ask myself if I am being too literal, and then I'm lost in thought or have fallen into a rabbit hole. I do this offline too. Sometimes that means I may never enter the conversation.

Took my writing to the beach today—a goodbye to this oddly sandy Washington beach where the waves sound like canons. It’s been a rare several days away from home for a writing retreat, and even though parts of me struggle with being away from my routine, many parts of me are thrilled with the adventure. #audhd #autistic #actuallyautistic #autist

I know there has been much discussion in many different forums about referring to us as Autistics versus Autists. Fair warning—i use both.

More often than not I try to use the same terms the majority uses though. Is that also masking?

@JeremyMallin I use #autistic in most public spaces. I am more likely to use #AuDHD or #Autist when I am in specific spaces where these terms are understood.@audhd @actuallyautistic

Don’t be edgy.

Edgy is being passive-aggressive.

Being passive-aggressive is an NT communication style, not an autistic one.

Some autistic people internalize this as part of their masks.

If you want to be passive-aggressive, just be “aggressive” and say what you want. Be you. Don’t sugar coat.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistics I know this conversation has grown since the original toot, but I wanted to wrap it back around. I dislike passive-aggressive communication. I agree. But what does this have to do with being edgy? 'Edgy' may mean something different to me, possibly a colloquial difference. I reviewed the dictionary and still can't quite understand fully. How are you using the word 'edgy' in this toot?

Author/Writing Retreat Day 1- We took a long break from writing to see the ocean. I’m utterly fascinated and soothed by water. It’s easy for me to spend hours lost in my head by the shore where I live, but we have a well protected bay at home not the open ocean. Here it’s long stretches of the Pacific. I watched the white caps until it was time to leave and even now at the B&B I can hear the ocean waves.

tip:
Feed your cat every time you take your ADHD med at the same time every day. Your cat will never let you forget.

My afternoon strattera alarm went off at 11am, but I was so absorbed in my work I didn't see the alert. At 11:45am, Nikita was like umm its past 11am feed me!!

Thus reminding me to take my ADHD med.

@ashleyspencer This is a great tip. When I used to provide education around medication management, I heavily encouraged people to pair the med with an activity that happened the same-ish time every day (coffee, brushing teeth) and set alarm to help habit formation. Feeding your cat? Brilliant. @actuallyautistic @Adhdinos @adhd

Thinking it over... if organisations won't set up on Mastodon but they will on Threads, I'd like the ability to follow them from here without signing up to Threads.

Totally understand @aussocialadmin's caution at this stage, but would be good to revisit when it becomes clearer how Threads will use federation.

I love my cats. I anthropomorphize them. They provide a quiet, steady companionship and comfort I cannot find in people. They comprise a fundamental part of my home and routine. When something is wrong with my cats, the world is wrong—everything about my day and life is broken without them. Please have compassion for those that grieve for and love their animals. @actuallyautistic

I fully expected to be bitten by this old chihuahua when my spouse let me out on a busy county road to catch her. Every truck that went by caused her to stop, shake, then run back and forth across the road. She's had it rough. I was worried she'd been abandoned. We got her cleaned up, fed, watered, and snuggled then I spammed the local interwebs hunting for her home. It only took 6 hours to find her home! And we got her back to them around midnight. I hope she stays safe!

Three months ago, I released THIS out into the world! I’m proud of Late-Identified A Starter Workbook and myself. And guess what? I’m about 1/3 done with the large print paperback edition! and studying the recording process for are my top non-fiction priorities this quarter.

@audhd @actuallyautistic I'm excited and anxious about moving out of state for three months. To help, I've been researching the area, looking at photos, and possibly taking an early trip to plot out better what a day could look like. Until the move, coping will include alerts/reminders to breathe and ground myself, research/rehearsing, deeply embracing self-soothing activities, and sensory mitigation to offload stress.
