Hey folks, fellow autistic person here! Does anyone have resources that might be helpful for a swim instructor who's working with a nonverbal student? Or resources for tools for the student's parent? It's not for me, for someone I know, but I told her I'd ask.

Throughout each day, I monitor for activities where I get stuck & keep notes. I'm hunting for patterns. I often get stuck in two places which are 'initiating' and 'sequencing tasks.' A third trap is when I do not have sufficient knowledge to break a task down into small steps. I am in a constant process of refining strategies to address these needs. As I create this next workbook, my need for listing & systematizing feels like a gift.

@magicalgrrrl That reminds me of the time I was asked by a therapist in a group setting, “have you tried not being depressed?” This is now a dark inside joke between me and a few of my friends.

BZBrainz,
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@actuallyautistic @audhd @magicalgrrrl Why didn’t I think of that? /sarcasm

If , , or could be stopped simply by force of will then the strong survivors I know would be healed. This is not to minimize strength or resiliency or perseverance or persistence… It just felt very much so like receiving therapy from someone who did not have firsthand experience in what it means to live with chronic or debilitating mental illness.

Today I’m in the process of resetting my project management system for quarter 3 (Q3). I’ve had people tell me they’d rather pull their own teeth out than do a project management at home. 🤷🏼 This process for me is very satisfying—color coded—and most of all, it works for me. Do what works for you!

BZBrainz,
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@chrysalis @Adhdinos @actuallyautistic Yes! It does feel lighter. When my brain is relieved of the burden of trying to remember ALL THE THINGS, I have room to breathe and be creative. It does not solve executive dysfunction but it helps so much. I used to use electronic systems, but eventually object permanence would get the better of me. If you’re willing to share in the future or direct me to a similar example of your system, I’d love to see it.

BZBrainz,
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@chrysalis @Adhdinos @actuallyautistic I am fascinated by this and its similarities to how my goals are broken into projects which are then broken into tasks. I’m still working on finding the right mix—I’m close. Do you keep the stack of cards at your desk? Was it inspired by a Kanban board? No worries if you don’t want to answer or can’t answer til later—life and thesis are of utmost importance.

@morothar @Adhdinos @actuallyautistic I may now forever call them quests and side-quests. I love-love-love that! ♥️

I hear a lot about Notion and Trello. Unless it’s gamified, apps are often forgotten—out of site and existence in my mind.

Excellent conversation with an friend today about detecting early rumbling (signs of impending meltdown) to help divert meltdowns and improve safety. If you experience meltdowns, have you identified early escalation patterns?

@RavenLuni @bookstodon @bookwyrm @actuallyautistic Learning about RSD (& PDA) changed the way I view my reactions & the way some of my close loved ones respond. I think, while these are not easier to experience, my capacity for compassion expanded for myself & others. As for the workbook, I have a growing list of additional social & medical vocabulary words tucked away for 2025’s V2. RSD is on that list.

@bookstodon @bookwyrm @actuallyautistic @adhd

In addition to expanded social and medical vocabulary, I’ve also been working on an expanded accommodations section, building out the resource list, and more. Very likely, this workbook will experience ongoing updates every one or two years to remain relevant for people new to their late-identified . ❤️

@simid @audhd @actuallyautistic I once made a TikTok about this topic, it’s complicated. I think I said…I was born , chronic complex PTSD developed over a lifetime, both have fundamentally informed who I am. My autism and PTSD can no longer be fully disentangled and I am no longer willing to try for the curiosity of others.

@milkteawitch @actuallyautistic I wear Loop ear plugs because they hurt my ears less, but after a while my ear are so sensitive I can’t stand anything in them. I don’t really want anything on or over my ears. Over the ear has its own challenges, they give me a headache after about 30 minutes.

@jpaskaruk @milkteawitch @actuallyautistic I’m definitely interested in recommendations. If it’s costly, I’ll consider my options. Being able to reduce stimuli comfortably rather than switching one negative stimuli for another… priceless.

I've often been told, "You are the worst interviewee I've ever had, and if it wasn't for..." Every piece of feedback I got, I'd write down and research until I got very good at being interviewed and interviewing. People who knew me then struggle to reconcile the person they met, the professional mask I created, and the person I am now, which is inextricably between them.

@Xopher @actuallyautistic Me too. Discussing short-term and long-term financial management/planning difficulties when you also have executive dysfunction has been a big topic in my home as we age. The is high, exhausting, and complex, and I am still working on untangling it and taking notes as I go.

My brain picked a motto this week as I applied for a temporary out-of-state job and considered formalizing the first draft of my next workbook. I don’t know where I heard it from, but I’ve been telling myself, “DO BIG BRAVE THINGS.” My rigid need for sameness is always at odds with a restless desire for adventure.

BZBrainz,
@BZBrainz@mastodonbooks.net avatar

@audhd @actuallyautistic I will keep learning, practicing, and accommodating. An example? When I travel I usually have a companion who can be a second set of eyes and ears for me—they don’t intervene unless it’s necessary. If something doesn’t go well, I can review it with them, and keep building skills around pattern recognition to improve my situational safety awareness.

When you’re an independent author, you are your own marketing team! And my marketing team forgot to post my weekly Late-Idenified : A Starter Workbook post.

I asked my marketing team to make a plan for next week. When no satisfactory plan could be found due to a fortune cookie was consulted. “Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.”

BZBrainz,

@UrsulaKatS @writers @audhd @actuallyautistic It starts with that awareness and the work/learning never stops.
