There's a moment when all old things
Become new again
But that moment might have been here and gone
All I have and all I know
Is this dream of you
Which keeps me living on

While messing around with a script to extract useful things from my Twitter archive I discovered that some tweets referenced twitpic.com which appears to still be active. I slurped down the relevant images, for posterity and uncovered this from 2010 when my iPad bookshelf appeared on the cover of a real magazine. Fleeting fame.

Tell me Granddad, what were music players like in the olden days?

Actually my grandson has a fabulous music player by Yoto that he adores. It’s really robust and easy to add your own tracks to. Would have been total science fiction when I was 2 years old!

An album I like disappeared from Apple Music for some reason so I’ve had to resort to getting the physical copy and importing it manually. Like a monster. Interestingly the default encoder now is Apple Lossless which is slow but should be good quality. Does make me wonder if I should be re-encoding the boxes of CDs in the attic though.

We broke out our own copy of Rolling Heights, only to discover that I had misread one rule initially, to do with placement of plan tiles that aren’t adjacent to your own tiles. With that rule enforced, placement became much more strategic. Doh.

@craiggrannell Hi, I am restoring my iPad from a bad beta experience and the Marvin ebook reader hasn’t made it (on account of not being on the app store anymore). I thought it was still possible to back these up and restore them.

Why am I talking to you about it? I have a vague idea you wrote something about this a while ago.

Could be hallucinating of course!

I do have the app on the iPhone still and it has survived several restores as far as I can remember.

Tried on MB Pro (M3 Max). Performance was fine on 14” screen. But after about an hour or so the escape key and main menu became disabled and I had to somehow trigger an auto save to be able to quit safely.

Is this a Mac specific glitch? Any ideas?

Indie Apple Watch app idea. Sneeze-It. Every time you sneeze this is detected by the watch accelerometers and other sensors and it automatically posts an “Ahhh-Chooo" post to the social media platform(s) of your choice.

Bound to get at least 1 million downloads.

Cursing past me for providing truly enigmatic password hint on old encrypted disk copy.

WTF did I mean by “Pb”?

Is it a reference to the periodic table?

Paddington Bear?

Who knows, the disk is a paperweight.

Sigh.

After 3 failed attempts we finally successfully landed at Heathrow in fog yesterday. Mid approach the intern put the plane in a wild corkscrew but we levelled out in time.

Anyone got any experience of PicRights? They are pursuing a charity we operate for using one of their images without permission. Yes, I should have linked to the image instead of placing it in the newsletter (sent to 200 people) but WTF, this is a charity making scrubs during the pandemic and the image showed our scrubs being used when the mayor received his first vaccination. This is hardly massive image theft and the image was credited in the newsletter.

So experts. Is this really how you have to do this. If I try and optimise the actions they no longer link together and/or the updated values are lost.

Trying to do 2 search and replaces in a URL…

I know this is entry level Shortcut Fu but it seems very cumbersome.

@eerko @Suzan any recommendations for Amsterdam board game shops/venues near(ish) Central Station. Trying to dodge work events with creative use of board games! Perfectly fine if you have no ideas…

Asked @IceCubesApp to generate alt text for an image of me holding my grandson. It said “Elderly man holding a sleeping baby, sitting on a couch with books and a blue vase in the background.” Which is more or less correct but I take issue with “elderly”.

The iOS implementation of Carcassonne by CodingMonkeys, carefully preserved, is still brilliant for a quick F2F with zero setup.

I object to the term “savescumming”. Reloads cover lots of accidental interface hiccups, rules misunderstandings, D&D knowledge shortcomings as well as just bad luck. The ability to reload almost anything respects players time. And is optional. You aren’t forced to do it.

This is a worry, the Serif apps are an inexpensive and well featured suite of software covering a good subset of the Adobe offering, without the subscription model. Everyone sees that changing, if not now, but eventually. https://toot.cafe/@baldur/112161182378536128
