I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon

Anybody here into archery? I’m thinking of taking it up and wouldn’t mind some pointers for a beginner. No hunting, only targets for fun & exercise. Considering a recurve with 30-40 lbs draw. Anything beyond that, I’m clueless. Planning a trip to a semi-local archery shop that has a good reputation. Advice?

Hey Fedi-friends, I need your creativity! I am making a gift for a friend and I need a word that starts with “p” and means awesome person. Something along the lines of badass or ninja, but starting with a p. Whatcha got?

(The idea is a mug with the acronym of a professional certification she is about to earn, but with the last letter changed - think Certified Widget Designer Badass if the acronym were CWDB)

Do you have little self tests to tell when you’re really sick instead of just kind of hoping you are? Mine is that when I’m actually sick I don’t want coffee.

I’ve been denying that I’m still sick today because I really wanted to go out with a friend tonight. But I failed the coffee test, so I’m trading margaritas and queso for bed and tea. 🤒😕 🛌 ☕️

Everyone congratulate me for not smacking all of my relatives when they didn’t even try the damn apple pie I baked. It was an effing good pie too. Luckily partner is a major apple pie fan (I mainly make it for him anyway) and I noticed that there is only one slice left now. 🤣

I’m trying to decide how to carve my pumpkin this year. I’m feeling uninspired. Last year I did a Dia De Los Muertos-style skull. Other years I have done a cyberman and other various geeky things. What ideas do my clever Masto-folks have?

I’m pondering perhaps an octopus, to go with Sammie, but it seems quite tough… I could do a sugar skull again. Or Winifred Sanderson… What say you?

Got a new TV because the old one died and was SO frustrated to find that it wanted to insist on taking me to this ridiculous Home Screen full of ads and junk every time I turned the TV on, even if the last input I had it on was the DVD player or something. I think I figured out how to change that, and turn off the damn ads, but what an excellent example of making something SO MUCH WORSE in the name of extra money.

Yeah, it’s these kind of complications that made me decide that LASIK is not “for me” even though the vision in one of my eyes is pretty bad (both are corrected), I can live with it. https://mstdn.social/@MatthewChat/112404984819210716

@Wraithe Sharing just my own story, because I was in a similar place to you. My intent is just to share my experience, not argue against the article or anything.

Fwiw, that is how I felt for a long time too. I did a fair amount of research because my eyesight was so bad and I couldn’t wear contacts, and wearing glasses made some things I enjoy (swimming, etc) difficult. What I read was that complication rates are pretty darn high for the shopping mall “buy one get one free” LASIK type docs. And that’s mostly because they don’t turn people away who shouldn’t be getting it. And the rates are much lower for docs who are really good and are willing to say “this isn’t right for you.” I finally bit the bullet and went to a very well regarded doc in Chicago. He was super clear that he would tell me if he thought in any way my eyes weren’t a good candidate for it. He recommended PRK instead of lasik due to my eye shape. It went well and has totally changed my life. I do have some very mild side effects (eyes are slightly drier and lights at night have a slight star effect). But those don’t get in the way of my life.

Every once in a while I think about what kid Cara would think of my life now. And…wow. I think 8 year old Cara would not even be able to conceive of it. I think teenager Cara would be pretty effing amazed and happy. 😊
