Made a thing!! Thanks to dad for some suggestions on the engineering and excellent tube wrangling. And thanks to all my followers who suggested materials! #emfcamp #emf2024 https://mastodon.me.uk/@CatherineFlick/112439027576222333

10 years or so ago I went to Australia and saw that the big thing was bao buns. Now it’s finally caught up here. Like bubble tea and good coffee the UK is roughly a decade behind Australian culinary trends. https://www.theguardian.com/business/article/2024/may/20/sales-of-bao-buns-on-a-roll-as-britons-fall-in-love-with-asian-treat

Village WhatsApp groups are such great spaces to find out how people think the internet works. Just write “is anyone having trouble with their internet?” And immediately you’ll get all kinds of bizarre theories about what to do to get it back. Today’s: “we had a power cut so it might take a while to come back on”

Exactly what I talked about in my TEDx talk the other night - the incentives just don’t align with making responsible technology. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/article/2024/may/18/openai-putting-shiny-products-above-safety-says-departing-researcher

This Defector article is spot on about Kevin Roose. He’s a consummate band wagon jumper, licking the boots of SV VCs and other useless fools. https://defector.com/if-kevin-roose-was-chatgpt-with-a-spray-on-beard-could-anyone-tell

I have a TEDx rehearsal today for my talk. I’m pushing the timing a bit so I need to talk faster! 😅

I'd like to make a canopy for our outdoor folding trolley for mostly so the kids have somewhere a bit weatherproof during the festival. I'm thinking olde times oregon trail style round canopy, so could be made with some sort of flexible tubing, cable ties, and a tarpaulin. Does that make sense? Does anyone know what sort of tubing I could use for that?

(not buying one off amazon or wherever because they're all coming from china and won't get here in time and also boo amazon)

Can someone just give me some sort of anaesthetic and wake me up when the LLM hype has fizzled out please? I don't want to have to watch everything I've said will happen actually happen (yes this is re: new OpenAI model)

Just FYI, if you have older parents or other family members, set up some sort of shibboleth with them so they know what to ask you if you ever call them asking for something. These new generative models are going to be extremely convincing, and the idiots in charge of these companies think they can use guardrails to stop it being used inappropriately. They can't.

I printed a hexpansion with a fidget spinner on it? I dunno, I don’t even use fidget spinners. I guess wanted to see if it worked! (It does!)

Normally I love to watch and live-toot but as Israel continues to be involved despite their horrific violence in Gaza, I can’t support the show tonight. Good luck to all the other contestants.

Absolutely gutted for my friends at Microsoft/XBox today. Shuttering studios that produced excellent and well received games just shows that the incentives in this industry are all messed up. Very distressing.

Edit: I’m off to bed so this offer is done, thanks!

If anyone here would like to go to but can't afford a ticket, DM me; offer stands while there are still tickets on sale. (you'll need to get to/from Eastnor and BYO camping gear though, sorry) https://www.emfcamp.org

@crimekillz hoping you're the same person from the EMF camping gear required wiki page - just want to let you know that you'll need a live in vehicle ticket to use a car-attached tent. If you don't have one, keep your eyes open for ones that go back up for sale as we don't have any more right now. Good luck!! (Don't want you to be disappointed when you get there basically!)

Yeah not sure threads is moderating as well as we’d like to federate with it yet (and, I suspect, it won’t ever be)

Edit: leaving this here for posterity but it’s been answered several times now, thank you!

Hey UK friends, any idea why my tomato seedlings have sort of come to a bit of a halt since repotting them? They had 2 true leaves when I did so, but seem to have stayed there for the last couple of weeks with no growth. They've been in a warm spot with plenty of light but no direct sunlight (kitchen island). Will they improve with windowsill/direct sun? Edit: seems so! thanks everyone!

Now I've written this TEDx talk and am refactoring it, it's quite a cathartic one for me! I'm railing against how terrible the incentives for tech companies are and how these mean that bad tech gets built all the time, even if the people developing it think they're doing a good thing

I gave "new" outlook the boot because it was not showing a bunch of emails until I closed and opened the window again. ANNOYING.

Academics: FYI if you refer to your own papers in a paper, you should anonymise those references. I've just accidentally unblinded the paper I'm supposed to be reviewing and while I don't have any conflict of interest it's not how this is supposed to work! @academicchatter

I’m not Christian but seeing the Tories accusing the Lords of racism calls to mind the rant Jesus went on in Matthew: “Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?”

CatherineFlick, to random
@CatherineFlick@mastodon.me.uk avatar

I was critical of the Cass Report earlier, talking about how discounting studies that weren't double blinded RCTs was bad form. Apparently Dr Cass has responded, saying that '"obviously" young people could not be blinded as to whether or not they were on puberty blockers or hormones because "it rapidly becomes obvious to them [...] But that of itself is not an issue because there are many other areas where that would apply"' https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-68863594
