I imagine there's a reasonable intersection between @emf visitors and owners?
If you have a Badger, you can put Iain's code on it to get listings for the main stages!
The Badger 2040W updates live (thanks @dannixon's API!). The earlier non-W edition uses the included static schedule (a tiny bit of that code from me).

African AI workers, mostly from Kenya, released an open letter to Joe Biden this week asking him stop US tech companies from “systemically abusing and exploiting African workers” and to end the “modern day slavery” they’re subjected to.

Backfire on the blockchain!

As Bitcoin hashing tech got more efficient, guess what happened to Bitcoin's energy budget. That's right, it went (way) up. Another example of the Jevons paradox.

Don't tell me Sir Beige Starmer is just as bad as Richie Rich Sunak. He isn't. I'm not saying he's going to be good. He isn't good. But he will categorically not be as bad for as many people as the Tories.
Would we do better under a different system? Yes.
Will some things improve less than we would all like? Yes.
Are there some policies where Labour isn't much different from the Tories? A few.

It's still going to be a HUGE improvement to the vast majority.

The biggest and hardest part of my job as a software engineer is helping people see that they are miscommunicating, and fixing it.

In the AI future I'm looking forward to having 30 minute 1:1s every few months with Windows to get re-aligned on how we will decide when to turn on Sticky Keys.

A friend is switching from IC to management, and was asking for advice. She hadn't thought of what I suggested so it's probably worth sharing more broadly:

Get someone promoted. ASAP.

The more junior someone is, the easier this is a. Whatever the promo process is at the company, follow it, and get someone a promotion, ideally within your first quarter.

Almost every "tell us about a time when" question you get asked in a manager interview can be answered with the story of doing that.

Trump's use of Nazi "reich" terminology to frame his campaign isn't an accident -- it's a Trial Balloon. As usual, he's floating offensive and outrageous idea to push extreme ideas and test public reaction. More at FrameLab with @georgelakoff

Going to and like to play or card games?

We've got 2h "workshops" on Friday and Saturday where you can come along and play some games, a bit like a board game cafe, but without the cafe or the per -hour charging.

We'll have some games or bring your own. Look in the schedule [ https://www.emfcamp.org/schedule/ ] under "Workshops" for "Board Games"!

What the hell is "superalignment"? When the "safety" people buy the BS of AGI, it's hard to know whether to take them seriously. We need safety without the superlatives, grounded in present-tense reality, not macho computer dreams and nightmares.

Milley’s comments about the second world war echoed in my head. It was, frankly, jarring to hear a recent top US official defend Israel’s mass killing of Gazan civilians by invoking wartime massacres that not only preceded the Geneva Conventions, but helped justify their creation.

Remember when tech CEOs whipped us into a frenzy about generative AI changing everything? Those days are long gone.

Google and OpenAI’s latest demos show the bubble is deflating, but they’re still going to seize as much power as they can before the crash.
