If you claim to be giving me a "universal" binary then that sucker better have Apple silicon, Intel, PowerPC, and 68k code in there.

Alright folks, who on fedi do I need to follow? Are there any up-to-date websites or forums about running BeOS today? So far what I have is the Be category on Haiku Community https://discuss.haiku-os.org/c/be/7

Here's the trial run of my Copland, BeOS, and Rhapsody machines running together in Harmony, I mean harmony.

Looks like there is what will fit on a table, so this will likely be the exhibit. Unless I get really over-ambitious and have a second table for the Mac OS X transition.

What's more obscure and retro than a TAM? Why, using the S-Video on the TAM to play a Japanese Sega Saturn! For October, here's Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, playing as Saturn-exclusive Maria. Comes with a nice Vampire Killer remix! https://youtu.be/iSX3vyT3SNM

Alright, here we go: I found a set of icons for all Mac models up through the beginning of 1997! Uploaded to Garden and Repo. They’re very nice; check ‘em out. https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/macusers-custom-icon-pack-iv

A Finder window containing folders with icons for "Compact Macs", "Desktop Macs", "PowerBooks", "Performas", "Mac Compatibles", and "Copland Icons".

Who remembers positioning the cursor in System 7 so that it showed 1 pixel between it and the progress bar, so you could tell if it had progressed?

Who remembers trying this in Mac OS 8+ and being frustrated that the beautiful gradient made it harder to tell if there was progress? 😄

It's a funny position not only having to say "that computer is too new to run the weird old experimental OS I want to run" but also "that other computer is the right model but too high a clock speed to run that OS." (Looking at an 8600/300 which won't work for Be OS: https://web.archive.org/web/20010204022700/http://www.be.com/support/guides/beosreadylist_ppc.html)

I have reached the stage of vintage computer collecting where the thought of even one machine being thrown out makes me sad, because it's an irreversible decrease in the number of machines available in the future.

Herein lies the road to hoarding.

Me in 1995: "Wouldn't it be great if I could run Copland?"

Copland dev team: "Same."

CodingItWrong, to random
@CodingItWrong@bitbang.social avatar

Welp, this is what I have so far: Copland does boot, but freezes on "Microkernel initialization starting…"

This might be a long-term project 😅 But it helps to know I have a Copland machine to try when I get an itch.

First thing to try will be, although the third-party video card displays, I have a DB15-to-VGA dongle on the way so I can use onboard video. The card may be confusing Copland.

Another option might be to actually hook up a debugging machine to get more info.

Me: "Vintage computers sure take a lot of bridging to use."

Also me: tethers work laptop to phone so I can connect to VPN so I can download a svn repository as a git repository

Got Be programming working. It's funny because "hello world" in this book doesn't render anything to the window, it just is a functioning window, because to have that happen with that few lines of code was already impressive 😄

Installing OPENSTEP 4.2 in a VM using this tutorial and it's going great so far: https://learn.adafruit.com/build-your-own-next-with-a-virtual-machine/overview

Sorry I forgot who on fedi I got the link from! If you've shared it recently let me know!

CodingItWrong,
@CodingItWrong@bitbang.social avatar

There we go, OPENSTEP is running! Only minor issue with the instructions were a few things that are named differently in VirtualBox 7 for macOS; I will try to redo the install to get notes/screenshots on that in case it helps anyone.

CodingItWrong,
@CodingItWrong@bitbang.social avatar

Alright, here's a blog post with the UI configuration steps for VirtualBox 7.0 (on macOS, at least) to run 4.2. Combined with the Adafruit tutorial it links to, you should have all you need to easily get it running. https://codingitwrong.com/2024/01/08/openstep-vm

Inching ever closer to selling my newertech processor upgrade card. I haven't had the least inclination to use it, since I have (1) machines that I want to run OSes that aren't compatible, and (2) much faster machines.

Here's the link for that NewerTech 250 MHz G3 processor in case anyone on fedi is interested: https://www.ebay.com/itm/235400081531
