i just spent an entire day doing 40 pages of speech balloon lettering for the comic book my wife is publishing for her MA

i used to think that there was any job on a computer that i could do, and like. i have finally found the one i could not do day after day.

cartoonists: you have my respect.

@vga256 so my dad went to elementary school with John Kricfaluci, creator of Ren and Stimpy. He's 100% sure it's the same one because the guy would create comics and my dad would do the speech balloon lettering, and how many John Kricfaluci's that do comics can there be?

To have any chance to use this NeXTstation on a regular basis, I'm gonna need to put the CRT on top of it. Anyone have suggestions for something I could put on top of the slab to prevent the CRT from marking it? Maybe some kind of heavy black foam so it doesn't take away from the aesthetic?

NeXT monitor arrived, works, and the picture is really nice. The borrowed monitor I have has a known issue where the picture is super wobbly for the first 20-30 min it's running (!). By comparison the picture seems somewhat dim too. I didn't realize how much more enthused a good image would make me to play around with NeXT!

Slab is arriving tomorrow from the same seller (testing on a borrowed one today). Hopefully it's in as good a shape!

@NanoRaptor i tried to find that article but wasn't able to. (other articles on that site about quiet quitting, just not that one.) do you happen to have a link to it? (i wonder if they were shamed into taking it down.) i think it gets at something key about some employers' unhealthy expectations

Putting together a timeline of the history of the web, and I'm not seeing much (in the categories I'm looking in) since 2017. What since then have been the main advancements in the web platform, in your opinion?

Won an auction on a NeXTstation and display (shipping now). It was a good price, but still more than I've spent on my other vintage machines. Watching Jobs' introduction of the NeXT computer to distort my reality so I'm convinced it was a good purchase 😄 https://youtu.be/92NNyd3m79I

CodingItWrong,
@CodingItWrong@bitbang.social avatar

@vga256 just the basic introductory slab; neither 😄 turbo nor color afaict

would love a turbo color and a cube, but i'm telling myself i need to really get good use out of my NeXTs/rhapsodies before that'd be worth the money

i borrowed a full working slab setup from the president of my local computer club; that's what's given me the confidence to buy, since i have known-good components i can test against and use until if/when i find my own

CodingItWrong,
@CodingItWrong@bitbang.social avatar

@vga256 i had had trouble finding next color monitors on ebay before for some reason, but i see 'em today, and yeah, certainly not the same kind of uniqueness

@hankg very cool! i had the thought the other day "did i hear about NeXT emulators on the web recently" but I forgot to check it out. that will be very fun to try!

What platforms were used in the 80s up to about 1993 or 1994 for Internet servers? It can be #FTP, #Gopher, #telnet, #USENET, the #OldWeb, or anything else that was on the Internet in that era.

My research indicates Solaris was very popular for web servers until Linux took over, and so I suspect it (and SunOS before it) was very popular for the Internet in general, but I'd like to hear from anyone with this sort of experience.

CodingItWrong,

@CGM @sinza I date the origin of the web by Marathon, the Mac FPS game. It was released in December 1994, and I know in 1995 I was browsing rudimentary web pages to download Marathon maps, texture packs, etc.

Was bidding on a CRT monitor, but I was starting to regret it. I just got outbid on it and I think I'm going to let it go. I have a borrowed one now, and it'd really work out better for my storage space if I can do the work to find a compatible flat-panel display (which I do know is a challenge).

Mica powder does seem to have fixed my MessagePad 2000's problem with sticky rubber coating. I went with black powder so it may be darker than the original.

WARNING: I'm brand new to Newtons so I can't guarantee mica powder will work on yours. If you try, please get advice from others too and test it first.

@vga256 keep me posted if/when you read it! i was being serious that i'm rereading it right now, would be fun to share any thoughts together
