How can I transfer a copy of Adobe CS3 suite to another computer and preserve the registration?

The suite came on the iMac G4 I got, and I want to reformat it, but I want to keep those apps running if possible. Don't really need them for anything, just don't want to waste it.

@CodingItWrong@bitbang.social avatar

@vga256 thanks! it's already on the latest supported OS, i just want to ensure nothing bad is running on it. but i'm thinking doing a "clean OS install" would likely break it, would you say?

i think i can boot off FireWire so I could try if the apps run when I do that.

@billgoats @vga256 I might just need to put a "DO NOT ERASE" sticky on that machine then (physical + stickies app)

@CodingItWrong@bitbang.social avatar

@billgoats @vga256 oh right, cloning the drive should work to preserve it. thanks!

Oh cool, and a working OLPC XO, just with a little screen damage. Heard about 'em but will be fun to play with it and learn more about it.

Installing OPENSTEP 4.2 in a VM using this tutorial and it's going great so far: https://learn.adafruit.com/build-your-own-next-with-a-virtual-machine/overview

Sorry I forgot who on fedi I got the link from! If you've shared it recently let me know!

CodingItWrong,
@CodingItWrong@bitbang.social avatar

There we go, OPENSTEP is running! Only minor issue with the instructions were a few things that are named differently in VirtualBox 7 for macOS; I will try to redo the install to get notes/screenshots on that in case it helps anyone.

Alright, here's a blog post with the UI configuration steps for VirtualBox 7.0 (on macOS, at least) to run 4.2. Combined with the Adafruit tutorial it links to, you should have all you need to easily get it running. https://codingitwrong.com/2024/01/08/openstep-vm

Any BeOS friends know what the best possible PCI video card for PowerPC BeOS is?

Pic for attention :)

@ActionRetro one data point: R3 and 5.0.3 run great on my 8500 with an iXMicro Twin Turbo 128M8

@ActionRetro it would be fun if there was something on that could stay running and other BeOS users could connect to, like an equivalent of the PPC Minecraft server

@AGMS00 ooh I might need to try that out!

Just ran across this video about the Macintosh Columbo. Always interesting to learn about Mac concepts I hadn't heard of before. https://youtube.com/watch?v=KyimKjSAtuY&si=kPQBiOKNnf5bFXtA

If you’re setting up a new printer this Christmas and have a bunch of test prints spare, you can put them aside and cook up a tasty batch of home made paper jam.

I just remembered a 1980s computer game where you fly a ship low over the planet, and there are what look like Star Wars sand crawlers in the distance. I think the premise is you're a space drug/resource smuggler. I think you could get out of the ship and fight on foot too.

Anyone have any idea what this was called? Sounds a bit like Star Wars for SNES but I think it's different.

A month or so ago when I mentioned Macintosh Repository several people accused it of some issues without providing any evidence to back that up.

I don't boycott websites based on hearsay. If anyone would like to point me to any record of wrongdoing by any site, I'd be happy to consider it.

@CodingItWrong@bitbang.social avatar

@bakkus that's great info, thanks. i think those links are already very helpful to dig into, but if you feel strongly about it then extra work to collect info could provide extra detail to folks. i appreciate you sending this, i will look over them soon
