Further evidence that I'm putting the history into my computer history hobby: to write a few sentences about the NeXTstation and NEXTSTEP for , I don't trust online summaries, so I'm like "I might as well reread the NeXT book from the start again."

(It helps that I need something to read to calm down before bed.)

@vga256 this one is good. The author is definitely unashamedly critical of Jobs, so I had to set that aside a bit, but it's good historical detail. Interestingly it was written just after they got out of the hardware business, a few years before the Apple question

@vga256 keep me posted if/when you read it! i was being serious that i'm rereading it right now, would be fun to share any thoughts together

CodingItWrong,
@CodingItWrong@bitbang.social avatar

@NanoRaptor @nygl what do y'all use the eMate for? I got one with a MessagePad 2000 and I'm trying to decide if I'll use it for anything I won't use my 2000 or 120 for

@NanoRaptor @nygl great, thanks for giving me validation to do the same 😄

Got a MessagePad 2000 and it works great!

Its finish is sticky, though, as seller reported. I tried what worked on my other stylus: IPA. Tested it on a corner and it got the goop off and doesn't seem to be damaging the underlying plastic.

Newton folks, think this is safe to do across the whole case?

CodingItWrong,
@CodingItWrong@bitbang.social avatar

@vga256 ok, I was wondering why it seemed like the plastic wasn't affected at all. So totally separate plastic and rubber layers, and the rubber has goopified

Macintosh PowerBook G3 Wallstreet.

CodingItWrong,
@CodingItWrong@bitbang.social avatar

@NanoRaptor I have a Pismo for capabilities, I want to get a Lombard for nostalgia since I used to have one, and I want to get a Wallstreet/PDQ for the unique "rainbow logo + swoopy design" combo

CodingItWrong,
@CodingItWrong@bitbang.social avatar

@NanoRaptor you know, i always thought the bit of the logo under the leaf was white to blend in with beige cases. doesn't really work visually on a powerbook

My iMac G4 came with some games that I haven't seen for download anywhere. Where do people upload these things?

@kalleboo @hamin once you've uploaded 'em please share a link here too so we know what's new!

Were MessagePad 120s always a bit green, or did they turn that way? Because here one is next to my gray hoodie and blue pants, and it's definitely not blue or gray.

@vga256 good luck! what are those black things in the center? Macintosh TVs? The black 5000 series I'm talking to @applepc about?

1:30am. Woke from a dream where my job was to catalogue old Macs’ Linnaean names. An extra tall 68040 tower with so many drives was Quadra imperator. I wanted to find the little Q605’s name but got lost in a paper describing something as Tritrinitron osmolskae.

Seriously, the inside of my head…

Shrine of Apple was a website with beautiful pictures of Apple's products over the years. It is gone now and, sadly, it looks like the product photos were never archived. All I have are these Performa 200 images I grabbed years ago. There is also a book, Iconic, with the photos, but it doesn't appear to be available anymore. Anyone have it?

@quadra700 I've seen Iconic for sale on eBay. I just picked up a copy at my local computer museum at a good price. If anyone is interested I could pick one up next time I'm there and ship it to 'em

    I have a corner of my house that seems to have standing waves from the highway half a block away. If I have no sounds in the house (fridge downcycled, no fans or aircon on, no music) I can't normally hear it, but if I put my head near the floor in one particular corner there's a pulsing sound.

    @NanoRaptor repost request: At one point you had a photo of a pile of beige dust with an Apple logo in the middle. Now that I have an 8500 this photo really hits home for me and I would love to see it again 😃

    CodingItWrong,
    @CodingItWrong@bitbang.social avatar

    @NanoRaptor haha thanks!

    I literally have a note on the back of the 8500 that says "don't mess with me" because every time I open it up to upgrade RAM or use a component in another computer, something goes wrong, and I have to re-disassemble-and-assemble it multiple times

    I used to want an 840av but at this point I think one 800 form factor is enough
