Recap: Bookworm RC 3 was planned around mid-May.

As Ethan would say while pushing the big red button: !

With thanks to the images team (debian-cd) and the archive team (ftp) for trusting me to handle parts of their workload, meaning a very comfortable autonomy in the release process.

@bwh Forcing 32 bpp for everyone seemed risky, so I decided I would go for a low-risk approach for the time being, before investigating a little more.

Various things seemed possible: (1) GRUB video drivers might not set metadata properly, (2) QEMU might fail to store/return it, and/or (3) Linux might fail to retrieve it.

Worst case, again with risk minimization in mind: I think I'd rather have both bochs and cirrus video drivers in GRUB default to 32 bpp.

Absolutely loving 🥰 this bit from our colleague Russ Allbery:

“The world does not divide neatly into supported and unsupported use cases. There are a lot of things I do to computers that I expect to work in some situations but not in others.”

@paul @zhenech This might have been the reason why I didn't link to or reference where the quote was coming from.

Just came across IPFS again, is this something people are still using seriously? Have they figured out how to take down actively illegal or actively harmful files (revenge porn, etc) that are being cached / redistributed by cooperating servers yet?

CyrilBrulebois,
@CyrilBrulebois@mamot.fr avatar

@paul If you want a related facepalm, I'll give you French authorities who just forced big French ISPs to lie about t.me, forcing DNS resolution to one of their servers, boo-ing users about the pedoporn they were supposedly trying to access, logging their IPs in the process.

@XOrgFoundation The answer is obviously: “whatever people actually doing the work are going to be working on!”

Speaking as a former X maintainer in Debian, and as someone who integrated it in the graphical installer, replacing DirectFB… Feeling a little sad to see that old friend go, not sure about the timeline in distributions, or about what (re)work will be needed in to keep a graphical version. But I'm sure we'll manage!

Full support! 💯

@madcoder Personally, I prefer the nyancat way of “outputting rainbows”…

@debian For the avoidance of doubt: this refers to a release candidate from a few weeks ago, and another one is coming up in a few days!

:boostRequest: I decided to leave my job (Principal Software Engineer) after 4 years. I have no idea what I want to do next, so I’ve been having loads of chats to try and work that out.

I like working in mission focused organizations, working to fix problems across the stack, from interpersonal down to the operating system. I enjoy “going where I’m rare”, places that don’t always get the most attention.

It's really mind-boggling... but I might have just watched the best TV series ever. and the incredibly brilliant .

@paul You're clearly missing out on .

@paul (It's clearly a joke, spare yourself seasons of agony and if you want some TV, jump on if you haven't already. Best 8 hours I've ever spent watching TV. Ev-er.)

Finally spent 5 minutes to check whether I was missing an obvious option to avoid tag's getting shortened as “tag...” when I'm looking at some-customer/some-version tags.

Hardcoded in “drawtags” but trivial to tweak:

set maxtagpct 25 → set maxtagpct 50

This is one of the longest mails I've written during this release cycle, with lots of thinking and anticipating over the past few weeks.

Let's see if the upcoming RC 3 and RC 4 can be managed in the way I envisioned…

What would my FLOSS fellows recommend to store and operate an rsa4096 GPG key outside my usual on-disk GPG keyring?

  • Very infrequent use (every few weeks/months).
  • Starting from an existing key.
  • No other feature/applet needed.
  • Must work on .

YubiKey 5C maybe?

CyrilBrulebois,
@CyrilBrulebois@mamot.fr avatar

@benoit The same Nitrokey as in the “Qualcomm PR stunt”? 😂
