Just seen someone saying how the Fediverse absolutely needs more journalists for any continued growth, and…

Haha, lol.

Fuck no.

Only 24 hours late, I'm watching #TOTP, and loving how much money they spent on tinfoil for N-Trance's set.

Can anyone help me rationalise the cost of apps that help focus by blocking access to distractions?

I get that they're providing a useful service, but why are they so expensive for what they do? Essentially, services like Freedom.to are just an IP blocker in a fancy package, right? So how is that £3 a month?

It just kinda feels like it's preying on people with who have been fucked over by apps and sites being designed to be little dopamine dispensers, and they have the only solution.

I find myself wishing I had the money, skills, and patience to build an M1 Mac mini into the case of a G4 Cube.

Just been watching something on YouTube about Robert Williams, the first person to be killed by a robot (machine) in 1979.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Williams_(robot_fatality)

He was asked to climb the racking to collect parts because the machine had malfunctioned and was running too slowly. He did so, was smashed in the head by a part of the machinery, and that was that.

And THIS SHIT is why I tell people at work that they’re not paid enough to risk their health.

I'm willing to accept that I've used a Mac for so long that needing to occasionally adapt to Windows' little foibles is difficult, so I avoid it where possible.

But I've just tried to connect to a shared network drive that wasn't showing up in Explorer, which took me 45 minutes to figure out.

On a Mac, cmd+K > type in the address > log in (if needed) > done.

On Windows, you have to be in a specific window in Explorer in order to add a network location, then go through a series of windows.

Just seen a well known voice on here wanging on about how QTing should be a God Given Right, and illustrating their point by screengrabbing a post they wanted to quote.

But didn’t add any alt-text to the screengrab.

And none of their followers mentioned it in the many replies.

sigh

LB: I’ve visited the Trevi Fountain. It was simultaneously enthralling and underwhelming, which was confusing.

It’s an undeniably beautiful artefact, but it’s crammed into this tiny piazza which is stuffed full of tourists, so you can’t really stop to enjoy it anyway. And yes, I do realise that I too was a tourist.

Running a bit late, but watching this week's episodes.

I have absolutely no recollection of Deuce. None.

That track was boring as shit, and feels like it was more about having a dance than anything. Terrible.

Having one of those moments where I’m fascinated by the optimism of 1950s/60s brutalist architecture, and how it juxtaposes with how much of it looks now.

Found this website that has some wonderful photos of brutalist buildings when they were new, and clean - https://www.somethingconcreteandmodern.co.uk

Had a fun walk to work this morning, which I managed in record time (for me).

It's a one mile walk, which Google has at 23 minutes. This morning I did it in 15, because I listened to one song that matched a good walking tempo for me. Kinda.

The track is pretty slow at 60bpm, but it soars with strings and that, so I found myself stomping at double time, counting a 4/4 beat in my head while I was walking.

It was nice.

I've been sharing what I thought were important documents via Google docs for the past eight months with a number of people at work, and have only just discovered that most of them have never been viewed because the invited person has to register an account, and they simply haven't.

No one has said anything to me about this.

😐

It occurs to me that the reason I struggle so much with those on the far right is that I honestly can’t understand them. I just can’t put my mind in a place that can comprehend what it is they’re so afraid of.

I could sit with them while they patiently explain that Muslim ray guns are taking over the country, but while there’s zero evidence, I just can’t put myself anywhere near that mindset.

Hey dudes! What are your favourite short books?

I’ve tackled an alarming number of long, complicated books this year, so need some short ones to stand a chance of hitting my reading goal.

Since I got this MacBook, I've been interested to see how it handles gaming. It's just the basic M2 chipset, but I'm under the impression that that still has some decent heft to it.

Well, I've just spent the hour or so playing No Man's Sky on ultra settings, during which I experienced no slowdowns, the Mac is warm, but not hot, and it used about 20% of the battery.

Pretty happy with that!

Taking The Teen back up to uni this morning. He’s currently operating on four hours sleep and a raging hangover.

So that’s fun.

Saw this absolute beast on the walk home from work last night, and I've never wanted to rag the shit out of a car as much as I do this one, because if you're going to die, you may as well have fun at the same time.

@miniphernalia will enjoy this one.

Had a speculative email from Indeed about a job that I might like to apply for. In the five benefits they've listed

  • Free parking
  • On-site parking

So, not too many benefits then, eh lads?

What ridiculously inconsequential thing irritates you far more than it ought to?

For me, it's when people list an i-pod, or I pod on Facebook or Ebay.

It's iPod. It's always been iPod.

Have watched some videos about Apple’s Vision Pro today, and it hit me why I’m less interested in it than I might have been.

Cost aside, I have no use for it. Not just Vision Pro; VR in general.

The USP of VP is “Spatial Computing”, of being able to surround yourself with apps and windows and incredible workflows, and, well, they’re just selling us expensive ways to do more work.

Honestly; who really does that much work?

Because I’m a masochist, and because I can, I’m going to install #Sonoma on my 2011 13” MBP.
