Do you get suddenly utterly exhausted when something you're trying to do doesn't work, and you end up going down a rabbit hole of trying to fix something that ought to fix something that should fix something that isn't working? Or is that just an thing.

*lol, as if there are any NTs on here

This morning I am mostly irked with other members of staff who were supposed to do the job I now do, but didn't really.

In particular, we use an online safety training provider. They have hundreds of courses that we have access to, so we assign relevant ones to employees and ask them to complete them.

Except what's actually happened is that our H&S manager has more or less clicked 'select all' > 'assign all', and considered that a good job well done.

Sure, huge American pickup trucks are badass, but are they as badass as this Fiat Seicento?

Been watching Taskmaster, and am disturbed to learn that Little Alex Horne is 6'2".

Morning comrades!

I need to start pondering the theme for next Monday's radio show today. I think it might be 'Numbers'.

Morning champions!

Was about to make a fry up, then I realised that I have no mushrooms or baked beans.

Bugger.

Catching up on the episodes I’ve missed over the past few weeks, and am dismayed to note that this episode opens up with the Fucking Outhere Brothers just yelling into microphones over a beat.

Sat here messing about with my 2011 MacBook that's now running Sonoma, and I'm genuinely impressed by it.

The lack of retina display means the resolution is pretty terrible on a small screen, the fan is getting a significant workout, and things take a little longer to load than I'm now used to on my M2 Air. But ultimately it's still a perfectly capable internetting machine.

Oh! If you’re in the UK (or have access to a VPN), my actual mum is the subject of tonight’s episode of Surgeons: At The Edge Of Life on BBC2 at 9pm.

She had cancer in her jaw in 2020, so had to have a chunk of her jaw removed. Since then she’s had a bunch of surgeries to rebuild it - with varying levels of success. So when she was in last October they asked if they could film her op.

TIL that if you cancel your Netflix sub and don't pick it up again within ten months, they'll delete your account, along with the ten years worth of viewing history attached to it. And they won't warn you they're about to do it.

Piracy, man; it's not a crime.

Funny how musicians pop up out of nowhere sometimes, isn't it?

So last night I got a hankering to hear Kerry Ellis' somewhat wonderfully over the top version of Defying Gravity*. Just looking through her stuff on Apple Music, see an album that came out a few months back. And wouldn't you know, there's a duet with Newton Faulkner on there!

I absolutely adored his first couple of albums, and had his demo from before he was signed.

As much as I appreciate Lemmy as a replacement for Reddit, it's really hard to get around the fact that the most active subs are the tech subs, because the early adopters are tech guys, and by extension they're mostly Linux-using Thinkpad owners. So many discussions immediately pivot to "Duh, just use Linux!"

It turns out that a vast number of people recorded a vast number of John Peel’s shows over the years, and so there’s an innumerable amount of them up on archive.org.

So that’s what I’ll be listening to today…

There's a great tribute record to the work of John K Samson on Bandcamp, which includes this magnificent cover of The Weakerthans - Watermark. But the collection is quite pricey for my wallet.

Anyway, I just found it on Youtube...

Got the christmas ‘91 episode of playing while I’m working. Do The Bartman just came on, which whipped me straight back to being 11 and thinking it was the best song ever recorded.

Nostalgia is a hell of a thing.

Got my Work Husband and his girlfriend coming over for dinner tonight.

They’re Italian, so what do you cook for Italians when your “nice occasion” meals are generally, well, Italian? Lasagne and bolognese are my favourite choices to mark an occasion.

A beef roast. I’m cooking a beef roast.

The spuds have just gone in, to cook in the beef’s juices. I’ve got sprouts sitting in a dish with pancetta, doused in olive oil and seasoned.

Been listening to the new version of Taylor Swift’s 1989 this morning.

I know that, as a punk/metal head I’m supposed to be at odds with everything she stands for, but her music is just damn fine pop. And what I love about her versions of her albums is that they’re not substantively different from the originals. She now owns the rights, but hasn’t changed what the fans love about them.

Most other artists would take the opportunity to change them.

I'm currently reading Laziness Does Not Exist, and it's certainly an eye-opener.

Read a part this morning that noted that studies show that, in an 8 hour shift, people work an average of 3 hours. That's astonishing.

And it's not that people just don't care (though that's certainly a part of it), it's that we just aren't designed to work for 8 solid hours at a time. There's no evolutionary reason why our brains need to do that. So they don't.

It's an odd quirk of #iPod maintenance, that the Apple-made device almost always works perfectly once its been formatted by a Windows machine, while - in my experience - formatting with macOS results in the thing refusing to work.

Put a new SD card in my 4th gen Classic last night, formatted it with my MacBook, and it refused to work properly. Just made Finder hang.

Formatted it with @Troggie's PC this morning, and it's currently happily slurping up music from my Mac.

May have got to the root of why that old Galaxy Tab I’ve been given is proving so tricky to work with. Its processor is a Tegra 2 32bit. So app support for such an old chip is going to be tricky.

I’ve now got it running Android 7.1.2, with Play Store installed, but it’s still not a great experience. Still, it’s a fun project.
