Can any experts offer advice on simple ways to make it send an email if a particular condition is met?

A quick search suggests needing to code something in Visual Basic, which is well out of my field of experience.

Did I buy these cans of Tangle Foot because I like the beer? Yes.

Did I choose them because the new artwork features a dog as a brewer? Also yes.

Oh! If you’re in the UK (or have access to a VPN), my actual mum is the subject of tonight’s episode of Surgeons: At The Edge Of Life on BBC2 at 9pm.

She had cancer in her jaw in 2020, so had to have a chunk of her jaw removed. Since then she’s had a bunch of surgeries to rebuild it - with varying levels of success. So when she was in last October they asked if they could film her op.

Personally, I’m all for Threads federation. I think it’ll be really good for Mastodon.

I regret to inform you that the dietary reply guys have found me.

If you need me, I’ll be in bed reading Dr Atkins Diet Revolution and fiddling with my fully automated luxury calorie counter while doing calisthenics.

DJDarren, to random
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

What’s funny about getting unsolicited dietary advice from thin people is how, if I ignore them, or tell them to go fuck themselves, then that just reinforces in their mind what a disgusting, self-pitying mess I am.

And if I gratefully accept their advice they’ll continue to think they’re better than me.

Either way, they come away feeling superior.

Funny, init.

DJDarren, to monitors
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

Granted these monitors are from different manufacturers, but the Philips really shouldn’t be 1/3 the brightness of the Dell.

Using my light meter in an unscientific way suggests that the Dell is 360lux. The same point on the Philips is 115lux.

Is the Philips just shitty, or is there something I’m missing? I’ve got BetterDisplay installed, but that can’t make it any brighter.

Re: , the EU and the DMA; I find myself considering that if you run your business in such a way that the collective governments of 27 countries have to tell you to be less shitty, then perhaps it’s worth pausing for a moment to ask if your business practices are, in fact, shitty.

Or you could just double down and act like a petulant child. Either’s good, I guess.

Hearing rumours that Miriam Margolyes is going to be announced as the next Bond.

A bold choice, but one I support.

@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

Can anyone better versed in Mastodon explain why I can look at someone's feed if I search for them while logged in, but if I look at their page directly on their server, there will be posts that I can't see while logged in?

I can't work it out.

It occurs to me that, when I first joined Mastodon, I was keen for the big accounts on Twitter to come over so it could feel like a proper replacement.

But here I am, almost eighteen months later somewhat glad that they didn’t. Because bigger accounts means corporate accounts, means advertising and bullshit. And there’s none of that.

No Burger King account throwing corporate shade at McDonald’s for The Numbers and “LOL”s.

It’s nice.

Just saw an incredible post about how, if OP was Tim Cook he’d simply stop releasing new products in the EU, and once the stock had run out Apple could leave entirely.

If OP were Tim Cook, the shareholders would be demanding his literal head.

I’ve taken to walking a slightly longer way home because a house on the way has adopted this excellent young man, who sits on the windowsill judging the passers-by, and I like to see him.

(What I hate about this stuff. I do actually have an Evri package on the way. So seeing this did give me that momentary pause. Although that the message is from some random outlook.com address meant it was an obvious scam.)

@craiggrannell I enjoy how they have to give instructions on how to circumvent the anti-phishing feature that’s in place to prevent things like this working.

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

@billyjoebowers The more I use Mastodon on my iPhone, the more I wish I could add alt text through Photos.app. If you post a reaction photo with any regularity, it’s kind of annoying to have to keep inputting the same alt text every time. I’ll do it, obviously, but it feels like something that the OS should be able to append.

Been reading a thread about Britain’s ‘obesity epidemic’, and it’s amazing how many thin people know how to fix it.

People clamber over themselves to wax lyrical about how we should encourage more exercise (we should), and how fast food joints should be held to account (they should), but the loudest voices never talk about it being a mental health issue.

I’m a fat fuck, I know I should exercise more and eat better. I did that for a year once and lost 30kg. Then I put it all back on again.

DJDarren, (edited )
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

I know exactly how to lose weight, but it’s really. fucking. hard. Like, the hardest thing you’ll ever have to do. You have to spend months or years depriving yourself of the things that you’ve learned bring you a shard of happiness.

But say you manage that and you lose loads of weight and everyone is complementing you on how good you look. Then what?

Then you have to spend every waking moment being aware of the things you just can’t have, because you can’t be trusted.

I believe that Oscar Wilde put it best when he wrote, “We are, all of us, real pieces of Work; but some of us are still In Progress.”

DJDarren,
@DJDarren@mendeddrum.org avatar

@Binder My favourite Wilde line is

“To lose one parent, Mr. Worthing, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness.”

Also,

“A HAND bag‽”

I love that whole play.
