I only briefly see the these days but they come daily to get the peanuts on my balcony and my yard. The thing is that the park is often crowded in the late afternoon when I return from work, and with Mr. Crow injured and Ms. Crow spending time in the nest, they don't hang out much in the empty park in the morning. Today was interesting, though (pics are from last week, I didn't have my camera).

When I got home, I saw crows chasing an eagle near my home. (🧵 ⤵️ )

I'm not sure who that was, Mr. Crow still can't fly much, so it wasn't him. Anyway, the park was surprisingly empty this evening (right when I was tired and wanted to take a nap after work) so I went for a little bit, but without a camera, which is a shame, because I saw Mr. Crow on a branch, then another one, then another one, then a cable, then a telephone pole (that luckily has "steps" for technicians to climb and birds to perch on) then another cable, then the top of the pole, ⤵️

then another higher cable from which he glided/tried to fly as best as he could to the tree where the nest was located. His wings are scarily short. Every time I see him in the air, they seem shorter than the previous time. Anyways, the poor thing really has mastered the art of climbing to a high position (I wish I had my camera - the pic is from last week). What happened next was interesting. ⤵️

Short : I've seen Ms. Crow quite a bit for the past three days, but she's always in a hurry. Also Mr. & Ms. Crow call each other with their "come quick, hurry" call as soon as food is found.
It can only mean one thing: BABY CROWS!!!! right? right?

The Fedipact table showing which servers are blocking Threads is not accurate!

For example, it says that atomicpoet.org is blocking Threads when, in fact, this is not correct. So view this entire site with skepticism.

Sakura update from across the street: not yet, not yet.

Although, this year it seems like a mess. While the "standard sakura" are not in bloom yet, some other rarer species are almost done already.

Maybe it's time to resume publishing my collection of postcards from the early 20th Century, don't you think?

And this time, actually stick to it?

Mr. and Ms. Crow wish you all a good weekend!

: I went to the park to see the nest situation and Mr. Crow.
I couldn't find Mr. Crow on a tree, but Ms. Crow was hanging out in last year's nest, so I assume they're fixing it (it'll probably be less work). She saw me and came down, and Mr. Crow showed up out of nowhere.
Peanuts were given and they were not afraid to get quite close to me (we were in another part of the park, not sure if it's relevant).

Quick
I saw Mr. Crow tonight. He seems in "good spirits." He came down "his" tree to get peanuts. He can't fly though. He hopped from a low branch to a not-as-low branch, etc. to hide back in his tree.
Both he and Ms. Crow are not roosting and staying in their tree tonight.
Ms. Crow has started to build a nest.
If he can heal before she lays eggs (or if they can recruit an older kid to help - crows do that sometimes) maybe things will be fine.
Keeping fingers crossed.

I can't believe it and am beside myself with joy. No fake suspense: Mr. Crow is alive!!!

I don't know what happened.

This morning, Ms. Crow arrived at dawn and made the call she made all Saturday and most of Sunday. She was there on a utility cable when I got up. We got ready for work/school. She arrived when I got out. Some peanuts were given and suddenly, as I was about to leave, Mr crow showed up... walking!!!!!

Crow update (no pictures).
So, as you know, Mr. Crow's wings have been repeatedly damaged over the winter and he didn't really have time to heal (i.e. grow new feathers, especially because the old ones didn't fall, they're broken but still in the wing, so I guess new ones can't grow.)
Yesterday evening, shortly before sunset and around the time crows fly away to roost, some very strong winds started.
I remember wondering how he'd be able to fly with the other crows. (1/2)

David,
@David@setouchi.social avatar

This morning, Ms Crow was around, ate some peanuts and... Ms Crow was around, begged for more peanuts and... No Mr. Crow anywhere. And as the day went I realized that Ms. Crow was looking for Mr. Crow, and called him many times. Including this evening when it was time to go roosting, she was still here calling him way past sunset.

I think it's the first time that I see her alone all day long.

Now, I'm seriously worried.

@elduvelle I'm really afraid that this time, this is it.

The thing that both reassures and concerns me is that she doesn't know where he is.

If she knew he was dead, she'd be taking part in a "crow funeral" not waiting for him here.

I still hope he had to hide somewhere because of the wind yesterday, but why didn't he make it to the neighborhood at all this morning is a mystery. It wasn't windy today, but it was cold. I hope he's just too weak to fly and will get better in a couple of days.

Should I reactivate my PixelFed account?

Reasons to do it:

  • The UI is so beautiful.
  • Reach new people.
  • It could be easier to share some pictures over my other Fediverse accounts.

Reasons not to do it:

  • I'm trying to have and use fewer accounts, not more.
  • The whole "we don't want to federate with Threads" thing that really aggravates me.

Hmmm... 🤔

David,
@David@setouchi.social avatar

@dansup Unless you have changed your mind, the last time I saw you talk about it, you said that communication with Threads would be limited by default, which would de facto prevent Threads users (100% of them being Instagram users) from discovering PixelfFed, right?

Or did I misunderstand?

David,
@David@setouchi.social avatar

@dansup Yes, and I disagree with both. The Fediverse is opt-out by default and by design. That's its whole point and raison d'être.

People who think otherwise (see the whole drama with the BlueSky bridge the other day) should maybe do some soul-searching and ask themselves why they're here.

Oh well...
You seem like a great guy, you're building a great platform. It just baffles me that you seem to not want to be discovered by the people who are the most likely to use it. 🤷‍♂️
