Allotment life.... Largely images and information about our successes and failures from our allotments in the centre of England. Mostly no dig, mostly raised beds apart from the fruit and potatoes which are in tubs. We keep chickens too and even though we have been doing this for a number of years we learn something new every week. It can be hard and exhausting but at the same time it can be rewarding and fascinating. We love it…

Lost another toot this morning - titled Potato update - the published banner appeared but I can’t see it on any timeline yet - strange and sad 😢 What I don’t want to do is create toots elsewhere because I like to write them while I’m on the plot!!! Hey ho ……

With all this rain ☔️ we have lots of growth. The squash plants have doubled in size over a week but not fruit yet ❗️ The sprouts are growing fast and have lots of little sprouts 😜

We left them overnight to dry before bagging them up to store 👍 From the first nine tubs of Picasso potatoes 🥔 we managed to get 55lbs and one stood out, weighing in at just a smidge under 2lb❗️

This year we’ve grown just six beds of field or fava beans 🫘 Five beds of Vespa field beans and one bed of Sutton Dwarf broad beans (Fava) The Sutton have already flowered and set beans so we’ll have a crop soon 😛 The Vespa are getting taller and starting to show flowers. These produce tiny beans, many more per plant🪴 and they are so tasty 😋

Flower time this morning 🌅 Moved a tray of twelve lupins outside 🤓 and started to collect everything needed to pot up a floribunda red rose called eternity 🌹

Greenhouse changes 😎 One of the reasons we accepted this allotment a few years ago was the greenhouse 🤔 We knew that we could fix the issues with the structure and state of the plot 🫣 Here a a couple of before and after images

May seem excessive but if we don’t eat them fast enough we have the chickens 🐓 who love cucumbers 🥒 Four of each: Mini Munch, Passandra and Picolino (and a couple spare to give away to plot neighbours 👍)

I guess we’re officially up and running with planting seeds for next year ❗️❗️👍 Planted seven small trays of alliums 😎 Red Creole Onions, Red Baron Onions, Walla Walla Onions, Globo Onions x 2 and Musselburgh Leeks x 2. Once up we’ll put them under grow lights 😜 , , ,

Made some wild garlic butter 🧈 A few of the white petals of the wild garlic 🧄 flowers and a block of butter 🤓Whizzed together and pasted into nine squares of an ice cube tray ready to freeze😜 So nice 👍

Couldn’t help it ❗️ We have bought some Edenrose hard neck garlic 🧄 to try 😛 We have not grown hard neck garlic or planted in the Spring before so we’ll see how it grows 👍 Twenty eight cloves in a raised bed and three spare cloves in small pots , , ,

The bare root strawberry plants arrived 🍓 although they were so dry when opened ❗️ We are sure they’ll be fine 👍 and have planted them into one litre pots for the winter 🥶

Reorganisation of the fruit cage underway 🤗 Some of the fruit like the blueberries will stay in the huge tubs but other things like the currants are going into the ground 👍 This is our lingonberry that we have moved to a larger tub 🤓 Moved from a thirty litre tub to a forty litre tub 🙌

The late calabrese 🥦 is forming nicely in the greenhouse and will be ready to pick before we know it 🤓 Even the late swede have started to form roots and will be picked by Christmas 🎄
