Queensland: Shortage of meds that are best for little kids with mycoplasma pneumonia. By Jackie Sinnerton

"Queensland Health reports that this year, up until May 5, 6587 PCR tests for mycoplasma pneumonias were carried out, with one-quarter proving positive"

@auscovid19

Source: https://www.couriermail.com.au/lifestyle/shortage-of-meds-that-are-best-for-little-kids-with-mycoplasma-pneumonia/news-story/e4b2b3c2f176eeb52b62da6ef3ceca12

Australian Medical Association Queensland president Maria Boulton said this included a shortage of an antibiotic suitable for small children to treat mycoplasma pneumonia. “It’s a liquid medicine that has to be taken only once a day and suits young patients better than other antibiotics that need more than one daily dose but parents are having trouble getting the hold of it,” Dr Boulton said. “Some parents are also concerned about having to wait for the RSV vaccine.” Queensland Health reports that this year, up until May 5, 6587 PCR tests for mycoplasma pneumonias were carried out, with one-quarter proving positive. RSV cases hit 28,909 for the same period. “The government needs ensure there are enough medications to cope with surges,” Dr Boulton said. Royal Australian College of General Practitioners president Nicole Higgins told The Courier-Mail GPs were finding medicine shortages a huge problem. “More must be done to ensure that all patients can access the medicines they need without difficulty or delay,” she said. A submission from the RACGP to the Therapeutic Goods Administration calls for mandates to ensure a minimum supply of medication is always available in Australia to more effectively meet demand. Dr Boulton said shortages of hormone replacement medications were causing Queensland women great distress as they grappled with debilitating menopausal symptoms. “This is so unfair on the patients; sometimes they go for substitutes which can cause further problems,”
“Medicine shortages are becoming more of a problem in Australia, and we need to see a comprehensive strategy from government about how to prevent shortages and how to manage them better when they do occur. Australia is particularly vulnerable because we import around 90 per cent of our medicines,” Prof Martin said The college proposes that international suppliers of medicines critical to the health of Australians be encouraged to enter and remain within the Australian market through TGA-driven incentives.

🇳🇿 New Zealand: 'Significant' wave likely to hit New Zealand this winter, driven by FLiRT subvariant.

Professor Michael Plank, from the University of Canterbury, said it looked as if FLiRT - sometimes referred to as FLip - was driving Covid numbers up internationally and there were signs that was starting to happen in Aotearoa as well.

"There had been a "rapid increase" in Covid hospitalisations in the past couple of weeks, with about 240 people in hospital with the virus, up from 120 a couple of weeks ago."

"It has risen quite quickly which does suggest that we are heading into a significant wave."

Masks work, our comprehensive review has found.

"Getting most people to wear a mask could nip the outbreak in the bud, preventing a pandemic or lessening its impact. Wearing a mask is inconvenient, but not as inconvenient as lockdowns."

"The bottom line from our recent review is masks work. Along with improving indoor air quality and avoiding crowded, underventilated places, they provide the best way to avoid catching a respiratory infection. And our findings support previous advice to not just wear any mask but wear the best mask available."

🇦🇺 Australia: COVID keeps killing more people every month than flu does in a year.

“In other words, there were three times as many confirmed Covid-19 cases as influenza cases,” Adrian Esterman, professor of biostatistics at the University of South Australia, told TND.

“And the death rate associated with Covid-19 was about four times as high as for influenza.”

He said it was “completely crazy that face masks are not mandatory in all health care, hospital and aged-care settings”.

Tasmania: "A senior obstetrician and gynaecologist who caught COVID during Burnie’s infamous hospital outbreak in 2020 is fighting his employer over ongoing effects, some 4 years later."

@TasmaniaHealth @GuyBarnett @auscovid19

Source: https://www.themercury.com.au/truecrimeaustralia/police-courts-tasmania/senior-burnie-doctor-fights-department-after-2020-covid-infection/news-story/d17abf7e91097ab0f2d00bc80bde1718

The doctor, who has not been identified, is pursuing the Department of Health for compensation, claiming he has never been able to return to full practice after first developing long Covid, and then a secondary injury of “distress and anxiety”. According to a newly-published Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal decision, the doctor was diagnosed with contracting Covid at his workplace – the North West Regional Hospital – on April 13, 2020. The media reported widely at the time that the hospital, and its neighbouring private hospital, were closed down due a Covid outbreak believed to have arisen from passengers on the Ruby Princess cruise ship. The hospitals underwent a deep clean and were quarantined for about a month. However the obstetrician, who took two months off work when he was initially infected, developed long Covid with “ongoing symptoms”. Due to those long Covid effects, as the tribunal noted in his management plan, the obstetrician lost his accreditation to perform certain surgical procedures. Late last year, he met with the hospital’s executive director of medical services, Elizabeth Deards, in a bid to have these credentials reinstated – but was told he’d need to undergo a neurocognitive assessment first. During her meeting with the obstetrician and his wife in 2023, Dr Deards said he appeared agitated, had obvious hearing difficulties, was easily distracted, and that his “narrative was disorganised, disjointed and, at times, abstract or bizarre”.
