Calling all grad students, phd candidates and postdocs! Your supervisorโ€™s job is to support you. Many are really terrible at their jobs and donโ€™t have the capacity or skill to be a guide and support for you. This is not your fault! Do not doubt yourself regardless of what your poorly trained mentor says! You are doing great. Youโ€™re probably way smarter and talented than you think. Find genuine support where you can. And be kind to yourself bc often academia wonโ€™t. @academicchatter

@vlrny went hiking today in the spectacularly beautiful finger lakes region of NY. It was a reminder to myself that there is beauty in the world โ€” having a hard time remembering that myself as of late.

A fairly large gorge looking toward the source of water flowing at the bottom.
A river with hills on the side looking toward a lake where it emplaned the hills beyond.

@FreakyFwoof Iโ€™m disabled and from my own anecdotal evidence, I see disabled people as having the least amount of people willing to advocate for them. I try to be an advocate for other disabled people even if we donโ€™t share the same disability.

@academicchatter @JoranJongerling I think Iโ€™ve got about five projects rn outside of my postdoc work. It feels ok. I use my salaried job hours to work on them though. Maybe thatโ€™s why it feels ok?

If I have more than one or two meetings in a day it feels like a waste. I just hate meetings. Whether or not if they move things along, it still feels like a waste of time.
