I'm going to be watching #thorRagnarok starting sometime between 5&7pm my time (circa 1/3hrs from this toot). If anybody wants to co-watch give me a wave and we can firm up deets from there. @lonelinesscorps
Research means formulating a question. Sketching the kind of evidence you think would provide answers to the question and then dispassionately looking for that evidence and either answering the question or determining it can't yet be answered.
Falling into an internet rabbit hole and stimulating your sense of fear or wonder reading the strangest things you can find that creep you out isn't research. It's fun maybe, but it's not research.
Yes both involve searching and reading but ... come on.
@futurebird I’m going to push back a little on this to say that much of qualitative research is not expected to be dispassionate. On the contrary, charmaz writes quite emphatically that qualitative research — social science more broadly — is informed by the researcher. Analysis, in particular, is infused with the perspective of the person doing the analysis. It’s part of the process.
@futurebird That’s an excellent point. One of the methods we use in social science that prevents the research from losing its empirical strength is reflexivity. I had to write a section in my dissertation where I had to examine my bias and motivation for my research. I think, as you point out, that’s what’s missing in internet research and such. It’s a skill though and not easy to come by imho.
Feminists taught me that Mad Max Fury Road is not a feminist movie. I get that.
Fury Road was just an action movie where the violent protagonist was a woman with a visible disability, instead of an able bodied man. I get that.
But I still enjoy the fact that George Miller looked at all the dudes that got angry that a woman was the star of a Mad Max movie, and said "Cry about it!" and doubled down.
I was excited to read this study until I got to the sample...all men. So while the headline generalizes the findings, they actually have no idea about how exercise changes saturated fat metabolism in women because they did not study women. When reading studies, always look at the sample. Even today women are being excluded from health studies. https://gizmodo.com/exercise-changes-saturated-fat-metabolism-study-1851481654
@amydiehl we need to start using the same cautionary phrase „in mice“ that is used for research except adjusted to cover this assumption by saying „in men.“
@DemocracySpot I really love disco, and btw, there is an interesting documentary on pbs about the history of loathing disco. Spoiler alert, it’s racism.
So as I was saying about not sticking your face right up in a venomous spider hole, same holds true for sticking your face right up to a weird alien thing. #FridayThrillerClub
