I’ve said before that gear doesn’t matter and I’ll hold to that, but I’ll also admit that when someone goes “oh, I only shoot light” and proceeds to list photo gear that costs more than a car, I twitch a little. what’s your full load out? just the current Nikon product line?

EllenInEdmonton,
@EllenInEdmonton@mstdn.ca avatar

@senanthic There are aficionados like that in every field of interest who have to make sure you know how much money they’ve invested in everything. Cyclists and quilters come to mind.

greenhouse looking a bit full. anyone got an ID on the begonia in the second pic?

An unidentified begonia with dark green leaves and little white flowers.

EllenInEdmonton,
@EllenInEdmonton@mstdn.ca avatar

@senanthic Everything looks so healthy. My houseplant passion has dwindled but I have a reasonable selection of survivors.

Spent the afternoon in my room, making a pattern out of an existing pyjama top for my wife. I still need to trace out the sleeve, but I’m happy with my progress so far. Slow but steady. @sewing

A large cutting table littered with oak tag pieces and various pattern drafting tools; you can see the front and back pattern pieces close to the front, with the scrunched up pyjama top near the back.

I'd really like to create some templates for myself like this. I took a class and got the concept but I made the mistake of not trying to do it right away!

Haha, I have a strict policy against punishing myself with perfectionism! I do want to get good at techniques that will allow me to wear my clothing for a lot longer (like French seams) but I refuse to look at wobbly seams or other items that nobody else would actually notice.

EllenInEdmonton,
@EllenInEdmonton@mstdn.ca avatar

@DanielMenjivar @sewing Cool. I learned the technique but I haven’t yet made something by tracing like that.

hi, all! if anyone out there has done any in and/or and has any tips or recs, I'd really appreciate you sending them my way. we're entering the trip-planning stage! about us: female-presenting, from the US, suffer from motion sickness, into food when we travel. thanks!

EllenInEdmonton,
@EllenInEdmonton@mstdn.ca avatar

@mazily
Hi JC, I lived in HCMC for a total of 6 years and travelled around to various regions. I think tourists can get a lot of experiences in Central , especially Hoi An and Huế. An interesting way to visit Cambodia is to enter from the Mekong Delta and visit seaside communities going north.
The train system in VN is the best way to avoid motion sickness and to travel safely.

New pizza spot just opened at the corner of the Presidio where I find myself most days. Will be nice after a run or bike ride.

This corner of the city is my favorite

@skinnylatte
I was super happy with the location of the HI hostel on the Presidio grounds! Such easy access to everything I wanted to see and do on my only visit to SF. And coming back in the evening, our bus driver even detoured her last stop to drop us off a little closer to the hostel! You don't get THAT kind of service in many corners of the world!

I don’t usually photograph noticeably human things but this is calming to me, mostly because there are no actual humans in the photograph.

Did your parent(s) try to hide certain books from you, while you were growing up?

I think my mom would have done better to just mix Rubyfruit Jungle in with all the other books, instead of putting it by itself on top of the bookcase. Curious teenaged me found it.

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon @lgbtqbookstodon
Haha, my mom hid "The Feminine Mystique" from everybody, stashing it down in our basement pantry among the home-canned goods. She was the farthest thing from a feminist I can recall but she wanted to find out for herself what the buzz was about.

Nice! There are some extremely cool buildings at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Centre, across the highway from Elk Island. I think that needs to be one of my 2024 destinations.

@senanthic @chad The entry fee gets me! Still, I’d go back if there was a group that was interested.

EllenInEdmonton,

@senanthic Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Centre: definitely worth a visit! One of the things that makes it extra fun is that the people in the buildings stay in character from the time period when the buildings were active!

It's so weird when people brag that they never cry. I get it buddy, I've been a repressive coper too, but I'm not proud of it.

I knew that I was on the WRONG antidepressant when I stopped crying! No way that I wanted my feelings blunted that much, even if public crying is embarrassing.

EllenInEdmonton,

That would be a magnificent challenge and you'd absolutely love the achievement. However, I'd suggest starting with a half marathon distance and/or a road marathon first if you haven't already done those.

EllenInEdmonton,

@senanthic
For me, everything sensory has helped during tough patches. Great aromas, tasty beverages, soothing tunes, lovely things to look at, comfy clothing. And breathing, of course, as others have mentioned. Also, plan a good reward for surviving the week, like a float!

EllenInEdmonton,
@EllenInEdmonton@mstdn.ca avatar

@senanthic
In my experience, physically demanding tasks offer a wonderful mental respite. Generally, when my body is truly busy, my brain stops focussing on annoyances. Still, that doesn't mean that I rush to take on physical tasks! Glad that the weekend gave you a break!

EllenInEdmonton,
@EllenInEdmonton@mstdn.ca avatar

@senanthic Well, a lot of folks are rather reluctant to use their sick leaves and vacation until it becomes a desperate situation. I'd advise not waiting that long if there are options.

EllenInEdmonton,
@EllenInEdmonton@mstdn.ca avatar

@senanthic
Yes, I know all too well how that works. Some of my better work years happened when I rearranged my OT so that I got a day off midweek every week or 2. The work was much easier to handle in smaller bites and a friend and I did long walks in lovely places on most of those days off.

Books with playlists. 🎧🎶🎵

I read a book over the weekend called The Mixtape by Brittainy C. Cherry. It was an awesome book. There were a lot of song references, and I did a search to find that the songs had been put in a spotify playlist. I've always loved the idea of books that have playlists, and now I'm looking for books that do this. Any recommendations? I've also started listening to lo-fi music while reading and doing computer stuff. Any spotify playlist recommendations for music to read to would be awesome! @bookstodon @romancelandia
