Saw this beauty through the window, a 4-1/2 foot (~137 cm) Central Ratsnake (Pantherophis Alleghaniensis). It climbed up a bush near the corner of the house and I was able to get some close ups. I didn’t see a birds nest, so I suspect it was preparing to lay in wait for prey to ambush, which I’ve read they sometimes do.

A long black snake on the ground among leaves and green plants.

EllenInEdmonton,
@EllenInEdmonton@mstdn.ca avatar

@mlawton @bomkatt @Lee6 I find snakes to be pretty fascinating and like most wild animals, they’ll gladly keep their distance from humans. I’m happy to do the same with them. I went for a memorable run when something flashed past my waist and was astonished to see it was a garter snake. They JUMP?!?

EllenInEdmonton,
@EllenInEdmonton@mstdn.ca avatar

@bomkatt @mlawton @Lee6
I swear that I could see a look of terror in its tiny snake eyes as it flew past me!!

Just been for a power walk in the spring sunshine. Tom has been telling me off for exercising while I’ve got a cold, but I’m thinking that you can’t pause for every minor virus. What does my crew say?

EllenInEdmonton,
@EllenInEdmonton@mstdn.ca avatar

@purplepadma
I think that rest is generally warranted during illness but there are benefits to fresh air and fresh views as well, assuming you're up for it.

I love my bestie so much but her voice notes are so long. I’m tired and full of cold and confused by the clock change and I’ve had to text her to say that I just don’t have the capacity to listen to an 8 and a half minute message. Am I an awful person?

EllenInEdmonton,
@EllenInEdmonton@mstdn.ca avatar

@purplepadma
Tell her you need the Coles Notes version of her message if she wants a response.

IMHO, you should contact the management of those establishments and let them know that you don't want to patronize them until they ensure that their servers are receiving tips.

That "Russian Tea" was seriously delicious, back when I regularly drank sweetened beverages, a very long time ago.

Frog porridge is a speciality. Can't say that I'd recommend it but it's edible.

EllenInEdmonton,
@EllenInEdmonton@mstdn.ca avatar

@liztai @Sollenbum
I suspected that you'd eaten it. It's bonier and more rubbery than chicken, IMHO. I'd much prefer chicken feet if I'm going to be wrestling with little bony things.

Not so worried about the wetness but:
"Swimmer's itch (cercarial dermatitis) is caused by a parasite that lives in waterfowl and snails." The itch would be quite significant if one were submerged in either Astotoin or Islet Lake!!

I am out of the house today, for the first time in over a week. Two weeks? More? It’s been so long I can’t remember!

Stopped by Tacos Moras on St. Clair West in for a delicious Torta. The bun! So good.

Lightly toasted bun with melted cheese, beans, guacamole, carne asada, onions and cilantro.

I'm hoping to visit at least one fabric shop in and/or even though I don't urgently need additional fabrics. Still, it's a sensory delight to explore a space with so many colours and textures!

Ah, you made it to the show! My orchid-hunting partner called in sick yesterday and I had a grandkid who wanted to hang out for the entire day so I'm letting the FOMO go. Another year, I'll go see the loveliness. Send photos, please!

I took SO many pictures when I did visit the Orchid Show but it's been a while. I currently have only 2 totally dead orchids in my collection and I'll probably wait a few months before I attempt another. It's one of those plants that I grow really well until I don't. Not much clue what has made the difference. Still, they bloom for a REALLY long time. in most cases.

This chart is really interesting to me, because it's something I've been thinking about lately. People of all ages have different kinds of intelligence, and perspectives to offer no matter the age.

EllenInEdmonton,
@EllenInEdmonton@mstdn.ca avatar

@RickiTarr Ha, I'm in my peak years for vocab and crystallized intelligence. I feel like this is really the case, at least in part because my brain is no longer busy with work or child-rearing drama. It's a bit of a shame about the body, though!!

Haha, parenting life is FULL of stories like this!! And still, for me, I feel like parenting was the best thing I ever did, even though my kids don't agree with me. I'm so happy they're here and that so many aspects of their lives are going so well. And raising them was full of delights as well as challenges.

little tip: when you're designing a webinar, please make sure the "thank you for registering" email includes the DATE and TIME of the webinar, ideally in the attendee's local time, so they're not receiving an email and going "okay, so... when, though?"
