There is a second research study showing possible autoimmune curative treatment that avoids wide spread immuno suppression in patients.

The previous one was regarding a "reverse vaccine". Are there any rheumatologists or researchers on here that can explain these findings in layperson terms?

Are they both targeting T cells?

"Thyroid Cancer Rates Are Higher Among Transgender Female Veterans"

This study has been bothering me since it came out in the media. Where are the stats for cis women veterans? And possibly even more critical is the possibility that trans women are once again having to be canaries in the coal mine but nobody is looking past their gender. That is, what are all veterans being exposed to that may be causing the uptick?

Makes you wonder how many corporate board members also hold investments in commercial real estate in the cities where their offices are located. I mean, it would be a wise investment, right?

Can you at least admit that your opinion rests on a truckload of privilege? Not everyone has - in a very practical sense - the choices you are basing your argument upon. There are influences beyond people's control like offices moving, jobs changing, real estate prices skyrocketing, school viability, etc etc etc. - and they change over time, after people are locked into choices that fit at one point. And oddly, it's extremely rare for these changes in aggregate to favor workers over the long term. They build up and workers get locked in.

Typically, people in good shape walk at 2-3 miles per hour. Does it really take the subway two hours to get from your home to your work? (I have no idea, I'm on the West Coast)

Frances_Larina,
@Frances_Larina@sfba.social avatar

@1dalm @leyrer

Managers do what they're told. So ask, "why would the board / investors be against work from home". Could it be they are also invested in commercial real estate in the area?

That's the weirdest part of this equation: on a balance sheet the cost between having everyone in the office and everyone working from home (or anywhere in between) is just about the same once a long term lease is signed. Unused office floors cost less over time. Those savings easily balance the infrastructure needed to accommodate work from home. So let's assume that even when locked into a lease, it's not a cost issue.

What's left? Image? Power over workers? Investment value of area commercial real estate? It feels like nobody is digging deep enough.

Frances_Larina,
@Frances_Larina@sfba.social avatar

@1dalm @mkoek @leyrer

Many smaller & midsize companies do, because they have different influences. Their leases are generally shorter, so they can move to a smaller office and save proportionally large amounts of cost. Bigger corps though are weird. They sign long leases, so the cost is the same for them, except that operational costs for vacant floors can be zero. So what's the root cause of their reluctance?

Frances_Larina,
@Frances_Larina@sfba.social avatar

@b4ux1t3 @1dalm @leyrer

If you (generic) are a manager and you can't trust your people to get the job done under your management...you aren't competent at your job. Maybe you got there via nepotism or cronyism. Maybe sexism or racism. Either way, you (the incompetent manager) are the one that needs to go.

Frances_Larina,
@Frances_Larina@sfba.social avatar

@bowreality @1dalm @leyrer

In our smaller office, it's closer to 30-35% that strongly prefer to work in-office. They also tend strongly to be sales and management - ie people whose jobs center around interacting with other people and in some way manipulating them. Face to face is their lifeblood.

Frances_Larina,
@Frances_Larina@sfba.social avatar

@CaseyWrites @leyrer

Happy workers tend to feel more secure. Secure workers are harder to squeeze more work and less pay from.

Maybe that's all it comes down to?

Frances_Larina,
@Frances_Larina@sfba.social avatar

@Saupreiss @kagan @sidereal @leyrer

That's often a bit of a false or disingenuous argument. Of course everything is a choice. I could choose to uproot my family today and insist we move to a yert in the middle of the Nevada desert. I'm talking about practical choices. The ones our economic system shapes relentlessly and rarely if ever in favor of workers. They add up over time. The oft-stated goal of "getting ahead" can be reframed to mean, "getting ahead of a level of economic coercion by playing the game".

Frances_Larina, (edited )
@Frances_Larina@sfba.social avatar

@b4ux1t3 @1dalm @leyrer

I agree. I'm lucky enough to have a manager that has worked with most of our team for a decade. We trust each other to get work done, so our manager went to bat for us to show the top management & board that work from home results - for us - in bottom line savings. The sales & marketing depts are more social though, so they work from the office(s). They are not surprisingly more productive there.
The problem for a long time was that our management structure largely consisted of people from a sales / marketing background.

Frances_Larina,
@Frances_Larina@sfba.social avatar

@CaseyWrites @leyrer

It's been my experience that in the current environment, workers whose employers show they care by shifting to remote if preferred have expressed feeling more secure - and motivated. Like a skewed sample, but there doesn't seem to be much research yet.

Frances_Larina,
@Frances_Larina@sfba.social avatar

@bowreality @1dalm @leyrer

That's an excellent point. So much of business & capitalism are built on extroversion, to the point of influencing society against those who are not.

Frances_Larina,
@Frances_Larina@sfba.social avatar

@thinking_images @leyrer

That feels so dystopic to me. I'd already be exhausted by the time I got there.

Frances_Larina,
@Frances_Larina@sfba.social avatar

@Saupreiss @kagan @sidereal @leyrer

We are taught from day one, both overtly and not, that better paying & overcompensation mean greater security. It's a sham, of course, as to play the game one must buy in, quite literally. But - and this may be crucial - there is no other message or social structure that most people are aware even exists as being viable.

"Smaller Employers Weigh a Big-Company Fix for Scarce Primary Care: Their Own Clinics"

The idea of in-house health care is so incredibly dystopic. And not just because it's another step away from universal health care, which should be considered a basic function of society.

I worked for a company in the early 2000's that was self-insured for health care. Financially it just made so much sense. Since the insurer and employer were one and the same, managers knew who the "expensive" employees were. Somehow they were always included in the periodic employee purges - oh, sorry; re-organizing events.

"Why would any cop do that to me, knowing I was highly traumatized & scared?!?"

A: Because power was what attracted some of them to the job in the first place. It's worse when they become the norm in a subculture like the police "brotherhood".

Does this book exist?

"How Universities Lost the Internet"

or has someone done research on this topic? That is, the fact that many North American universities have ceded all technical capacity to Microsoft, Google, etc?

It used to be students could get web hosting, email, and even some cool experimental online stuff through their schools. Now every online communication channel is locked down.

Frances_Larina,
@Frances_Larina@sfba.social avatar

@rwg

It's every "history of networking" book? The Internet was originally government owned and universities were the majority of the nodes - until it grew a bit more. Then the federal government made an overt decision to privatize the entire thing. Now schools must purchase access from ISP's.
