I find it...upsetting, to say the least, that conservatives decided to leak Aiden Hale's notebook photos just as organizations are announcing their Transgender Awareness Week (next week) and Trans Day of Remembrance (Mon Nov 20th) events. It feels like Steven Crowder & the right wingers who are promoting the leak are trying to stir up violence. Maybe riding the emotions surrounding Israel-Palestine.

Good news for people with ovaries who are on testosterone and want kids. Also, proof against transphobic arguments.

"you may get less eggs with testosterone treatment, but those eggs are fine and still create normal embryos"

Marin County is having an election today because of one ballot measure, put on the ballot by the ~25 multi-million dollar value property owners on a street in Mill Valley who want to force the county to administer taxing them and then giving them the money to fix part of their private road that never should have been built in the first place.

It's terrifying. The prior thermodynamic systems for moving heat energy around our planet, including storing and releasing it as needed to maintain a balance, are breaking down one by one. And as each one falls, the pressure increases on those around it, bringing them closer to failing. We're on another exponential curve, and like in 2020 with the COVID infection curve, we are doing little to even try to slow it down now, at the beginning when it's cheaper and easier.

It's greed. That's what will cook our planet in the end.

Global Sea Surface temperatures are still about 5σ (0.8°) above the 30-years average from 1982-2011 (which is surely already above the pre-industrial level).

Is everybody really so sure, these are only temporary effects or why is this not in the media?

To me, the graph looks rather scary.

Austrian Physicist Lise Meitner was born in 1878. She was the first to pinpoint the atomic phenomenon now known as the Auger effect, but it was credited to Pierre Auger who independently discovered it months after her. Years later when she made a breakthrough in identifying and understanding nuclear fission, her findings were published only under the name of her collaborator, Otto Hahn, who later also received the Nobel Prize for this discovery. via @IAEA

"Behind every great man...is the woman he stepped in front of"

So, is physics thinking of renaming the Auger effect?

Is the Nobel committee thinking of awarding her the medal posthumously?

Those small gestures would go some way toward righting the wrongs of physics' even-more-sexist past.

I disdain the label comorbidity for many of them. Specifically, the ones where the social disability model applies. For instance, are sensory issues or NVL really a disability or are they primarily a problem because society won't give up a millimeter of comfort for the peak of the bell curve?

"Sherman High School transgender student loses lead theater role over gender policy"

This is just petty. First the principal says there's a new policy that actors must match their AGAB. Then when called on it, says there's no policy, it's just for this specific show. Then said that it's the show itself, "Oklahoma" is just too adult for high school.

Every now and then, the Harkleroad House wind turbine in Novato gets mentioned in the media. It was made of half-oil-barrels mounted in a framework on the roof of a cinderblock workshop on a hill overlooking highway 101. Next to it was a homemade round house that rotated. The nostalgic news stories are always accompanied by one of two photos from post-2000 real estate listings for the property that show the barrels painted white. And that's what makes me a little sad.

None of the journalists apparently know that when it was in its prime and people would see it from the road on their way to Santa Rosa or Napa or Guerneville, it was painted in Pride rainbow colors, one hue per half barrel. Even as a little kid, I knew there was something special about that, even if I didn't know the social significance yet.

This story has been updated to include a statement from Vallejo police, sent a week after publication, which argues that certain force categories were not well tracked prior to this year, leading to a substantial increase in those categories.

Officers also used Tasers more frequently as well as batons, beanbag rounds and flashbangs. There was also a dramatic increase in incidents when the force caused severe injury, which happened five times in 2023 but not at all in 2022, according to Vallejo police data.

“The worldwide BTC mining network consumed 173.42 TWh of electricity during the 2020–2021 period, bigger than the electricity consumption of most nations. I don't know if this is valid or not, so take it with a grain of salt, but images of Nashville school shooter Aiden Hale's manifesto may have been posted online today. This is how Netanyahu justifies erasing Palestine:

From the Torah: "I will punish the Amalekites for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys."

"The lesson, when read literally, is clear: Saul’s failure to kill every Amalekite posed an existential threat to the Jewish people.

47% of Israeli Jews said in a poll conducted last month that Israel should “not at all” consider the “suffering of the civilian Palestinian population in Gaza” in the next phase of fighting. Casting the enemy as Amalek reinforces that attitude."

One problem:

"Rabbi Jill Jacobs, the head of T’ruah, a rabbinical human rights organziation, said that rabbis generally agree that Amalek no longer exists, and that references to it do not provide a morally acceptable justification for attacking anyone."

But having all of these benefits comes with a great variable: what will be your future annual cost? That’s not up to you."

Seriously, is this not Biz-Ed 101, and hasn't it been ever since the first company that decided to lock itself into a single supplier? Wasn't one of the lessons supposedly learned during the COVID supply chain collapses that Japan's version of Just-In-Time ordering included multiple layers of alternate suppliers, all kept viable by distributing purchase orders? Aka, growing a supply infrastructure or ecosystem?

Here in the USA, we just go for whatever is quickest-and-cheapest, right now & who cares about tomorrow because I'll be movin' on up (or out) by then.

Maybe that's uh...not the best way to run businesses after all?
