I remember the White Stripes used to put something to the effect of "this album was made without any digital tools" in their liner notes.

How long until an author writes "this book was written with no assistance from generative AI" in the preface?

(maybe I should do this for the next book)

What i want to know is what these university administrators think happens after they let the bullies get their way

(Bullies, famous for being like, we're good now, and just going home)

Capitulation is thus incompetent as well as cowardly

I don't know if folks are comfortable answering this:

If you have experience running #Mastodon or other federated software on a #Tor #onion, would you be willing to share about your experience?

I've tried to follow people via a .onion link and have had no luck. I'm curious to see how effective such a system could be.

A while back I wrote a blog post about universities losing the internet, and this analysis of the British Library hack hits on many of the same themes:

https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsocialsciences/2024/03/19/the-british-library-hack-is-a-warning-for-all-academic-libraries/

It's a discussion of how IT knowledge is outsourced to the point that academic/library institutions are highly vulnerable.

Here in Toronto, the public library is only now recovering from a hack that kept many services offline for months.

i'll admit, i was a bit taken by the hype (and, before that, speculation) surrounding in the years before its release

but the moment i saw they decided to not ban nazis, and just give you an option to hide them algorithmically, i was done with that platform

that's a social media experience with no goddamn teeth or grit or courage

rwg,
@rwg@aoir.social avatar

@vantablack I like to call the former the 'covenantal fediverse' for the reason you're stating -- instances banding together through their shared ethical values, summed up pretty well with the server covenant

Which is not to say that people all AGREE on how to implement ethical standards. (the disagreement is part of the... fun)

I think my Home timeline on Mastodon has reached the tipping point of being too fast for me

quick, someone make an algorithm that sorts it so that I only see What's Relevant To Me (TM) and thus I won't be challenged by all the different ideas I'm seeing

And above all, it's a public broadcaster walking the walking instead of just griping about X and then going back to X.

I have a question for folks who know about , particularly self-hosted

I have a Wordpress blog that has been pretty low-traffic for years, but recently has seen a spike in traffic. Looking at the logs, the traffic is coming from places in Europe and New Zealand. Each visitor visits a single page, does not go anywhere else, and leaves. It doesn't look like human traffic.

This strikes me as bot-like. Given Wordpress vulnerabilities, should I be worried?
