Very cool looking position for the right person at ProPublica - an organization actually driving change and accountability in society. A product oriented web developer.

Wish they explained how it works more, but maybe they have patents to get approved first.

Interesting to read about climate change as a symptom of a wider ecological ecological view of the planet.

Critics of ‘degrowth’ economics say it’s unworkable – but from an ecologist's perspective, it’s inevitable https://theconversation.com/critics-of-degrowth-economics-say-its-unworkable-but-from-an-ecologists-perspective-its-inevitable-211496

Family elder needs a medication tracking app. Has to be simple and not have small UI elements. Needs help remembering what they’ve already taken; reminders to take meds would also be useful.

Any suggestions?

Panic’s #Nova is a step closer to getting source level remote debugging of binaries (Swift for example) on a server or in a Docker Container (!!!). This would be outstanding for #Vapor development, for example, for folks who don’t find VS Code to be a nice macOS app to use.

I’m also hoping it’ll get support for doing embedded coding as well someday.

Details on the issue raised and the first steps here, with a branch to try out and give feedback, if you like: https://github.com/panicinc/icarus/issues/4

This post from Derek Sivers is a nice example of why my dad’s advice to read all of everything I sign was good advice:

https://sive.rs/mistake

It irritates title companies when I read all the documents involved in buying a house (the things I’ve found in them!) before I’ll sign them.
Them, in frustration: “It’s all just the standard boilerplate! You don’t need to read that.”
Me: “Yes, I do."

After the first time I began to warn them and suggest they provide them to me in advance.

I don’t get what a Toyota is thinking. The “Woodland” edition of the hybrid Sienna comes in Black and Cement. Huh? How about, I don’t know, maybe Forest Green? Midnight Blue? (sigh)

That “can’t have too many clamps” thing felt closer to true with this crazy antique drawer customization to fit around modern plumbing project. So many things to clamp that I couldn’t even clamp them all together in one step. I had to glue in three of the pieces and let them dry while also gluing together the two remaining pieces into a sub-assembly that I then glued in as a second step. There are probably better ways to do this :)

Robot competition a friend’s kid’s team is in. I’ve never seen these before. 48” tall bots on entry to the pen. Can expand after that I gather?

Looks fun. Feel bad that our rural location meant Geek didn’t get to do this :-/ Ah well, we did the best we could with what circumstances allowed.

Ok, so if you’re unhappy with how much money is getting spent by super rich dudes (mostly) and their less rich friends on buying elections, here is some concrete work to end the SuperPACs that make that possible. Lawrence Lessig and crew have been working on this for years, making progress, and they are about to make a big step on a path to returning democracy to all the people not just the rich.

Info on their strategy and an opportunity to support their work:

GeekAndDad,

@bigzaphod There are a number of creative ideas to find something in the middle before ordering a PCB (though that’s getting a lot easier and cheaper according to folks I follow who do it regularly).

Some examples: https://www.crowdsupply.com/ben-wang/perf-2

But this is the most amazing one (they’re working on a new version with improvements):

There will come a time in my life when I won't need any software that has a subscription. This thought cheers me more than seems appropriate.

@oldmankris @jackbrewster I have a file named “If I Die.txt” that’s also printed out and kept with my will. It has subscriptions listed in it along with various accounts, contact info for lawyer, cpa, etc, and other things my wife or kid might need to know to clean up after I’m gone. I update it when anything significant changes. And stuff like who can help with selling any of my things that need a knowledgeable person, gifts of stuff to go to friends, etc. Might help

a skinner box but instead of sugar pellets you get semi-accurate piles of big words

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@toba In the ‘80s I made one of the first (so I was told by my professor who did his graduate work with Skinner) computer game based Skinner boxes :)
Just had to give the human player meaningless “points” and they’d play for a long time - for free! (Important for an impoverished student who couldn’t afford to pay human subjects! 😂).

Unsurprisingly, they behaved just like rats in a Skinner box in terms of learning the optimal way to spend their time. :)

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@pixel That seems like part of it, but I’d go one step further - current wealthy power brokers need to keep the general populace scrambling to survive so they don’t have any energy or time to organize against them politically.

GeekAndDad,
@GeekAndDad@mastodon.social avatar

@pixel Until the recent move towards autocratic anti-democratic control, I didn’t understand how the 0.5% thought gutting the middle class was going to be a good thing since traditionally the middle class had enough wealth they didn’t want to lose that they can be manipulated to side with upper class against a larger lower class. Now I understand that they think they can have it all if they can consolidate enough absolute power. The level of greed is astounding. And scary.
