I've been working on a subtitle editor plugin for !
It adds a extra button on the update video page, and can do most of what you find in other tools, like visualize audio, basic formatting, and makes it easy to switch language.
The goal is that it should be "good enough" for most who just want to add subtitles/captions, but don't want to spend time finding and downloading dedicated software for this.
Instance administrators can install it via the plugin page.

Screen recording of me opening the subtitle editor on a video about accessibility in Copenhagen. I demonstrate visualizing audio, panning, editing text in the english translation, and moving the start of the subtitle text.

(it's not the most readable code tho...)

Would love to hear if it's missing something important and general feedback.

A cool feature could be more collaborative features, allowing users to write or suggest subtitles for other users videos. Not entirely sure how to approach this yet, but I know YouTube have had a mixed history with this.

And it adapts to themes so it work well with dark mode too :)

2008, me: I love the idea of cryptocurrency

BITCOIN: The word "cryptocurrency" now means "financial scams based on inefficient write-only ledgers"

2018, me: I love the idea of the metaverse

FACEBOOK: The word "metaverse" now means "proprietary 3D chat programs with no soul"

2022, me: I love the idea of procedurally generated content

OPENAI: From now on people will associate that only with big corporations plagiarizing small artists and turning their work into ugly content slurry

Could be cool if chat and communication apps could agree on weather pressing enter or ctrl+enter sends the message or adds a newline

Herover,
@Herover@helvede.net avatar

It wont happen because in email it makes sense to make newlines but less so in chat apps, but one can dream...

Here is the footage where Putin calls recent American warnings about a possible terror attack in Moscow a lie designed to destabilize the Russian society.

@anderspuck would it be embarrassing or inconvenient to admit the warnings were true now? Or easier to just insist the two things has nothing to do with each other.

Herover,
@Herover@helvede.net avatar

@anderspuck actually, can't imagine many politicians would admit to a possible mistake that killed people

if you use Linux on your personal computer: what do you like about it?

I used to be super into customizing my window manager, but now I mostly like that it's so easy to install software, and that the environment is the same as on a Linux server

(please no arguing about whether people "should" use Linux on their personal computers, I'm just curious about why you personally like it)

Herover,
@Herover@helvede.net avatar

@b0rk It's easy and pretty quick to re-install, so I'm not afraid of experimenting and breaking stuff (which I usually ends up doing :D)
And if I actually want to try to repair my mess, I find that it's usually somewhat possible without resorting to black magic.

Hey fellow tall trans women: I ran the statistics a couple years back because I was curious - there are more women 5'11" and taller than there are trans women in total in the US. It's hard to parse out outliers of outliers in the far edges of the bell curve, but in general, it's not until you're taller than about 6'6" that there would be a greater than 50% chance that a woman of that height would be a trans woman.

Herover,
@Herover@helvede.net avatar

@JessTheUnstill heh, my only "regret" about HRT is that I've gone from 200 cm (6'7") to 199 cm and can't say that I'm 2 meters tall anymore...

That's a cool statistics, do you know if it's available for other countries or was the source US specific?

Herover,
@Herover@helvede.net avatar

@skye @JessTheUnstill another solution is to not measure at all, can't tell what you choose not to know about 🤪

Me and @solgudinde when the open source enthusiasts tell us that the open source alternative is just as easy and intuitive to use as the corporate tech version of whatever programme we're using...

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ciG0FvIUxKM

PS: I'm a big proponent of open source software. I just want us to stop lying about it being just as easy to use as commercially developed, proprietary stuff.Lets just own the clunkiness, folks

Herover,
@Herover@helvede.net avatar

@maiathecyberwitch @solgudinde just saw someone on a tech subreddit try convince someone that if they thought it was annoying to use their video editor to remove audio, they should use the much much easier ffmpeg comand line tool and then pasted 3 lines of cryptic commands to run :D

@thegibson accidentally sent 12000 emails to me and the other developers... On our private email accounts.

Later at the same place I made a module for sending scheduled mails and tested by setting up a 7am "good morning I'm a test" email. It somehow ended up on the live system on a Friday, so our beta testers/possible future customers got some peculiar morning greetings during the weekend 😖
