For reasons way above my pay grade, I am babysitting a rabbit. If I am insufficiently prompt in refilling the food bowl it repeatedly picks it up and throws it at the floor until I get the message.

We don't know what air-sea gas exchange is at high wind speeds not because we don't encounter those conditions but because it's currently impossible to deploy a CTD/rosette at those sea states.

We gotta figure out how to sample in these conditions.

Screenshot of a weather monitoring interface showing various readings such as air pressure, relative humidity, air temperature, water temperature, wind speed and direction, and radiation levels. The absolute wind speed reading is circled in red and is 31.5 m/s

A 2023 Nature survey of 1,600 researchers found that more than 25% use AI to help them write manuscripts and that more than 15% use the technology to help them write grant proposals. 👀

IanMBrooks,

@davidho if their AI-written proposals are anything like the AI-written answer to an exam question I recently dealt with, at least they'll be easy to quickly reject.

Just signed this letter to the Prime Minister, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology and Chairman of the Conservative Party, protesting against their position on 'kicking woke ideology out of science'.

There is a unique sense of dread that accompanies surfacing from sleep in the wee small hours and realising that what woke you is was the sound of the cat being sick somewhere...

...it's not even our cat 😶

IanMBrooks,
@IanMBrooks@mastodon.world avatar

@helenczerski um...

At least it woke me. Far worse is not to wake, then step barefoot into a pile of cold sick in the morning... Don't ask me how I know that! 😬

First life drawing session after the summer break...inevitably feeling a bit rusty, but this first 10-minute pose isn't too shabby.

My sister has just lent me Chris Van Tulleken’s Ultra-Processed People, itself “processed” by her dog enthusiastically carrying it around the house for a couple of weeks. Apparently it was his favourite carry toy, and I’ve just temporarily deprived him of it.

@helenczerski it's sort of sweet that the dog loved it so much, but the bibliophile in me is crying inside.

I spent last week with Sail Britain (https://www.sailbritain.org/) on their Between Land and Sea artist residency - sailing a 12m racing yacht, Merlin, around the coast and islands south of Mallaig, drawing the landscape, foraging for mushrooms, eating same, drawing more, swimming, and enjoying the company of a lovely bunch of people I'd never met before. Had a fabulous time. (photo of me by Julius Koschnick)

Sail Britain is a rather wonderful one-man company attempting to promote environmental awareness through the arts on short sailing trips. Highly recommended.

As a professor of oceanography, I think it’s underappreciated that the ocean is wet.

IanMBrooks,
@IanMBrooks@mastodon.world avatar

@davidho I know someone who grew up in the central plains of Canada. When she first stood on a beach at the ocean's edge she was shocked when it jumped at her & got her wet.

Tidying my office the other day and I found my favourite ever certificate, from ten years ago. We had helped with the release of a stratospheric balloon in Texas and then tracked it to recover the data once it was back on the ground. Steely-eyed ballooner!

Back in UK...and sort of wish I wasn't. Reading news of sewage closing swimming spots in UK. 3 days ago in Oslo - this is how an inner city watercourse is managed... properly!

@helenczerski yup... terrifying in that you can see where we're heading. Vaguely hopeful in that there is an alternative. And just a great read.
